Apple CarPlay coming to 40 different models this year

Apple may have first introduced its CarPlay system last year, but it will only become available in significant numbers of new vehicles this year.

At its Apple’s Spring Forward event, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that CarPlay will be available on 40 different models in 2015, and claimed all major carmakers have signed on to offer the system at some point.

Apple initially said that Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo would be the first to offer the system, but Hyundai began shipping 2015 Sonata sedans prepped for CarPlay last year.

When it unveiled CarPlay at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show roughly a year ago, Apple also said a long list of manufacturers were planning to offer it “down the road.”

That list included BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Mazda reportedly joined the party later on, and Volkswagen announced that it would offer CarPlay back in January at CES.

However, neither Apple nor any of the automakers have publicly discussed any specifics about models that will be available with CarPlay, or timing.

The most expensive model equipped with CarPlay will probably be the Koenigsegg Regera hybrid supercar. The Swedish automaker is the latest – and probably the smallest – to join the CarPlay ranks.

Apple wouldn’t elaborate on the timing of CarPlay’s full launch this year, but expect announcements from individual carmakers in the coming months.
