Bentley considers building custom one-off cars for well-heeled customers

Ferrari is becoming more invested in the custom-car game with projects like the F12 TRS, and soon Bentley may follow suit.

The British carmaker’s sales and marketing chief told Autocar that Bentley sees potential in one-off cars with custom bodywork placed over the architecture of existing models.

Such an operation would actually bring Bentley back to its roots.

It’s one of the few luxury carmakers still around that existed during the golden age of coachbuilding, when the manufacturer often supplied nothing but a bare chassis to be clothed in custom bodywork by another company.

That produced cars that were truly unique, and Bentley’s modern customers surely have an appreciation for that.

The customization program could build on existing bespoke operations like the Bentley Studio and Mulliner, which built the limited-edition Mulsanne 95 and is itself named after coach builder Mulliner Park Ward.

These programs feed the need of Bentley buyers to stand out, and burn cash. The carmaker wouldn’t say how much a one-off vehicle would cost, but noted that it would be aimed at consumers for whom money is no object.

Building custom cars for the obscenely wealthy is reportedly no more than an idea at the moment, but Bentley is very interested in the concept. So don’t be surprised if you see an unrecognizable shape wearing the Flying “B” hood ornament waft past you on an upcoming commute.

Porsche’s second electric model is a sports car in hiking boots
2021 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

Porsche turned the Taycan, its first series-produced electric car, into a zero-emissions station wagon named Cross Turismo. The model blends the heart of a battery-powered sports sedan with the personality of a rugged SUV.

Previewed by the 2019 Mission E Cross Turismo, the second wagon in the Porsche range (after the mighty Panamera) has changed little in its transition from a concept to a production car. It shares its basic front-end design with the Taycan sedan, no one is going to mistake it for anything other than a Porsche, but it gains a longer and flatter roof line that clears up nearly four additional inches of headroom for the rear passengers. Trunk space checks in at up to 15.7 cubic feet with a full load of passengers on board, and 42.8 cubes with the rear seats folded flat.

Volvo unveils the electric 2022 C40 Recharge with Android-powered in-car tech
Volvo C40 Recharge

Volvo has joined the chorus of carmakers going all-in on electric cars. It announced plans to pivot towards an EV-only range by 2030, and it introduced a battery-powered crossover named C40 Recharge to drive the point home.

As its name implies, the C40 Recharge is related to the XC40 Recharge under the body. And, if you're familiar with the Swedish firm's naming system, you'll recognize right away that the C prefix has historically denoted coupes and convertibles, such as the C30 and the C40. The C40 is not a coupe in the traditional sense of the term because it has four doors, but it wears a fastback-like roofline that underlines the company's seldom-seen emotional side. While Volvo thrives on rationality, it developed the C40 as the kind of car you buy with your heart, not with your mind.
