Chevy will roll out Android Auto as a software update this spring

Earlier this year, Chevrolet announced that it would add Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to 14 2016 models, and other General Motors divisions have similarly ambitious plans. Now that the 2016 model year is getting underway, Chevy is making good on that promise by beginning its Android Auto rollout.

Chevy says Android Auto will be available as an update for models equipped with the 8.0-inch MyLink infotainment system touchscreen, starting in March 2016. The carmaker claims it will have more Android Auto-compatible models than anyone else.

The list of compatible models covers most of Chevy’s current lineup, including the Cruze, Malibu, and Impala sedans, Tahoe and Suburban SUVs, and Silverado and Colorado pickup trucks. Android Auto will also be offered on the Corvette, Camaro, and Volt. Chevy will make Android Auto available for models equipped with the 7.0-inch MyLink infotainment system at a later date, meaning the redesigned 2016 Spark will eventually get it as well.

Owners will likely have to go to dealers to have the update installed. The system requires a phone running Android Lollipop 5.0 or above, and all compatible apps have to be installed on the phone before use. A “Projection” icon appears on the infotainment screen when the phone is not in use, and is replaced by an Android (or Apple, if so equipped) icon when the connection is active.

GM is covering all of its bases by offering the competing Apple CarPlay system in Chevy models as well, and all GM brands will eventually feature models with both systems. Back in June, Cadillac announced that it would offer CarPlay and Android Auto on the majority of its 2016 models, and Buick and GMC followed with similar announcements shortly after that.

Among the Detroit Three automakers, GM seems to be the most enthusiastic about these branded smartphone projection systems. Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles have not discussed any plans to offer either CarPlay or Android Auto.

Samsung has made Android 12 and One UI 4 available to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 just weeks after releasing the update to the Samsung Galaxy S21 family. The update has dropped first in the company's native Korea, but will likely be making a worldwide rollout in the next week or so.

As with the S21's release that came last month, One UI 4 and Android 12 bring enhanced customization and security features to Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 owners. These include a new feature that themes your phone with the color of your wallpaper, customizable emoji, and more. Privacy wise, OneUI 4 owners will now see indicators when their cameras or microphones are in use, preventing apps from accessing those clandestinely.

Google rolls out an update to fix the Pixel 6’s most infuriating issue

Google's Pixel 6 and 6 Pro just received an out-of-cycle update, and reports are that the update tackles one of the most universally decried flaws of the phone. The changelog, as shared by Verizon, reveals the update "improves the performance of your device's fingerprint sensor."

While minor updates like this are expected over the lifetime of the phone, the Pixel normally has a regular cadence of updates, with a security update every month, a feature drop every quarter, and a major update every year. That Google went out of its way to push an update to the Pixel 6 specifically addressing the fingerprint sensor says a lot.

Google officially released Android 12 for its Pixel phones alongside the launch of the Pixel 6 series. The release came after the company had already uploaded the source code to Android Open Source Project earlier this month. Now non-Google manufacturers are now detailing their Android 12 beta release timeline for the devices. Vivo is the latest company to reveal when its phones get the Android 12 beta, joining others like Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, and Xiaomi.

Vivo announced a list of 30 smartphones that will get Android 12 beta in the coming months. The smartphone list varies from the top-of-the-line Vivo X70 Pro Plus to the budget offerings like the Vivo V20 and Vivo V20i.
