Finally! 2016 Acura’s second-gen NSX supercar confirmed for 2015 Detroit debut

After many concept-car and prototype appearances and even more rumors, the 2016 Acura NSX will finally debut in production form at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show in a few weeks’ time.

Acura is keeping the car under wraps until then, but the production version is expected to look very similar to the original concept that debuted in Detroit back in 2012.

That certainly seems to be the case based on the short teaser video Acura released (see below), which also gives a taste of the NSX’s soundtrack.

The hybrid powertrain making those nice sounds is based around a twin-turbocharged engine. It’s expected to be a 3.5-liter V6 working with multiple electric motors in an amped-up version of the Sport Hybrdi Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) concept introduced with the RLX sedan.

Like the much-loved first-generation NSX, the new hybrid model will take on the supercar establishment. Its likely rivals include the Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Huracán, and Audi R8.

That means the NSX won’t be quite as extreme as the current trio of hybrid supercars – the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder – but it will be (slightly) more relevant to the real world.

Pricing could start at the low end of the mid-engined supercar segment, and production volumes will probably dwarf those of the Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche, which were limited to just a few hundred units each.

Following its Detroit debut, the 2016 NSX will launch in late 2015. That will bring an end to what has been a long wait, particularly for fans of the original who have been hungry for a sequel.

Hopefully, the reimagined hybrid NSX will be worth the wait.
