Is Bugatti preparing to unveil the Super Veyron after all?

Bugatti is up to some trickiness this morning as it posts a teaser image to its official Facebook page. As you can see from the image above, the teaser doesn’t give us much. It’s simply a set of hangar doors, slightly agape with some sunlight bursting through.

Included with the picture is this cryptic caption: “The stage is set. It’s almost time for us to share the latest example of exceptional Bugatti performance, simply keep a close eye on Facebook over the next few days.”

What many in the industry are taking this tease to mean is that the long anticipated Super Veyron is soon to debut.

We reported early this year that Bugatti had ordered more Veyron transmissions, which likely meant another even more extreme version of the Veyron was in the works. We wagered it’d be the Super Veyron, which would be even more powerful than the Veyron Super Sport.

Early indications put the top speed of a Super Veyron around 288mph with a 0-60 time in the 1.8-second range thanks to a horsepower output around 1600.

Alternately, the next Bugatti car could be a concept that previews the up and coming 16C Galibier. The four-door luxury car would put out 1400 horsepower from a 16-cylinder engine.

Expect the next Bugatti to be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show later this month. We’ll be sure to bring you more as it unfolds, so check back?

The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge started this week in Darwin, Australia on a 1,900-mile race to Adelaide in a collection of 44 solar-powered vehicles. The biennial race crowns the fastest solar-powered cars in the world. Entries came from 20 different countries, and include four from the United States; University of Michigan, Stanford, the University of Minnesota, and University of California - Berkeley.

Run since 1987, this event is possibly even more relevant today than when it first started. With the onset of electric-powered cars, motorcycles, and bikes, the world could be turning a corner on how we power our transportation. With the great strides in power and distance an electric vehicle can now travel, it makes sense to look for the same gains in solar power.

A case has been brought by the Federation of German Consumer Organizations against Volkswagen in which 470,000 owners of the 2.0-liter TDI EA189 engine are seeking compensation due to the company's diesel emissions scandal. The scandal was uncovered in 2015 via a tip from European researchers to the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board.

The scandal centered around Volkswagen's emission computer. which was programmed with different parameters depending on whether the vehicle was driving normally or under an emissions test cycle. In an emissions cycle, the emission system would react normally allowing Volkswagen to claim it had "Clean Diesel" engines to combat electric and hybrid competitors. In normal driving conditions, the emissions system would shut down, allowing for better power and mileage, while also creating emissions up to 40 times the legal limit.
