What’s in a name? Jaguar adopts SVR performance badge beginning with F-Type SVR

When building a high-performance luxury car, you need to choose your letters carefully.

To designate sportier versions of various models (and because luxury carmakers love to copy each other) there’s now a thick alphabet soup awaiting buyers, including BMW M, Mercedes-Benz AMG, Audi RS, Cadillac V, and Lexus F.

So far, Jaguar has used the R-S designation for its hottest models, but now it will reportedly adopt the SVR moniker introduced on sibling brand Land Rover’s hot rod Range Rover Sport.

Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) boss John Edwards confirmed the change to the Dutch publication Telegraaf, and said the future performance range will include an SVR version of the F-Type.

That model would overshadow the current F-Type R as the top model in Jaguar’s sports car lineup, meaning it will probably make more than the R’s 550 horsepower. It should be quite a beast, then.

Beyond that, expect Jaguar and Land Rover to grow the SVR range into a full lineup of cars and trucks, just as rivals have done with their performance sub brands.

A new XF SVR to replace the limited-production XFR-S would be nifty, and Land Rover has discussed doing a Defender SVR to give that beloved model a proper sendoff.

However, neither brand has made any firm commitments, and Jaguar won’t say when we can expect the F-Type SVR. Soon, we hope.
