Now, JeepTrackhawkForums is reporting that FCA will be introducing a Trackhawk version of its Renegade subcompact crossover even before the Grand Cherokee model debuts in 2018. Should the rumors prove true, the Renegade Trackhawk would be powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine developing at least 300 horsepower.
In addition to the added grunt, the road-going performance Renegade would be lowered, come with an all-wheel drive system, sport bigger brakes, and wear unique bodywork. It’s a mystery which FCA transmission would be used to handle the extra power, but don’t expect a manual option.
Jeep’s Renegade Trailhawk has been a sales success thus far, with its off-road specific enhancements, so a street-only performance variant to follow in the footsteps of the Grand Cherokee SRT would round out its entry-level crossover range.
With subcompact crossover competition surging, and more automakers plotting high-performance editions of new and upcoming models like the Audi Q1, Buick Encore, and BMW X2, a hot-rodding Renegade won’t seem uncommon by the time it hits showrooms in 2017.
Bottling the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT’s stylistic and performance success won’t be easy, but another entry into one of the fastest growing vehicle segments isn’t a bad idea.
