The Audi Quattro could apparently make a comeback for the 2014 model year.

Audi teased the motoring world back at the Paris Auto Show in 2010 with the Quattro Concept that you see above. We figured the German automaker would build a production version of the A5-based Quattro at some point. We just didn’t think it’d take four years.

The wait makes sense, though. The original Sport Quattro was introduced in 1984. This would make the next-gen Quattro a perfect 30th birthday present.

The production Quattro is set for a Frankfurt Auto Show debut later this year in September, where the Audi brand stage will focus on all-wheel drive – as if that were something new. “We have a great history with quattro four-wheel drive, and this will be reflected by what we have in store for the Frankfurt auto show,” an Audi source said to Autoweek.

Although the Quattro will share its underpinnings with the A5, it should be around eight inches shorter and weigh far less than the 3,850-pound A5.

Under the hood Audi is said to fit its TFSI 4.0-liter V8, which will produce 600 horsepower, which is 40 more ponies than the RS 6 Avant that also features the new 4.0. Mated to that small chunk of aluminum German pride will be Audi’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel.

Intriguingly, the Quattro will have a torque-sensing sport differential from Torsen that will allow the Quattro’s all-wheel drive to torque vector each individual wheel, vastly improving grip. This should make the Quattro good for a 0-62mph push in less than four seconds and a top speed of 186.

As soon as we learn more, we’ll be sure to bring it to you.
