Lincoln Star concept previews upcoming EVs

Following the lead of parent Ford, Lincoln is getting serious about electric vehicles. The Lincoln Star concept previews a line of EVs the luxury brand plans to launch over the next few years.

As expected, the Star concept is an SUV. Lincoln has been an all-SUV brand since the Continental was discontinued after the 2020 model year. The exterior vaguely follows the profile of the current Lincoln Aviator, with the passenger compartment pushed far to the back. But in place of the Aviator’s blunt front end, the Star has a streamlined prow that’s probably more aerodynamic.

The interior has a lounge-like design, including wraparound rear seats with leg rests. Second-row passengers also get an integrated drink cooler and individual screens. Up front, a dashboard-spanning screen follows the current luxury-car trend. Transparent roof pillars with 3D-printed metal latticework aim to create a feeling of spaciousness across all rows.

Like many EVs, the Star has a front trunk (aka “frunk”) where the engine compartment would be normally. Lincoln also used electrochromic glass that can switch from transparent to opaque, letting light into the cabin while driving or hiding stored items when parked. The rear cargo area also includes a small fold-out couch.

Lincoln didn’t disclose any technical details, but the automaker noted that it has an EV-specific vehicle architecture that will underpin future models and can accommodate rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive drivetrains. Note that Lincoln was previously slated to get a Rivian-based EV, but that vehicle was canceled in 2020.

Those future Lincoln EVs will start arriving soon. The automaker plans to launch three by 2025, and a fourth in 2026. Lincoln expects more than half its global sales volume to be all-electric vehicles by mid-decade. That’s an ambitious plan for an automaker with no EVs in its current lineup (although there are some plug-in hybrids), but Lincoln will be able to leverage parent Ford’s resources to make that happen.

An aggressive electrification strategy is likely also necessary to keep pace with other luxury brands like Audi, BMW, Cadillac, and Mercedes-Benz, all of which have multiple EVs on sale or under development, along with ambitious sales targets of their own.

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is the first all-electric vehicle from Maybach, the ultra-luxury subbrand of Mercedes. It takes the EQS SUV launched in 2022 and bathes it in opulence, adding more chrome on the outside and more creature comforts on the inside.
Scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. this fall, the Maybach is an unusual EV proposition, taking what is supposed be a forward-thinking design and wrapping it in old-school luxury. Ahead of its launch, Digital Trends got an up-close look at the Maybach EQS SUV to see how Mercedes is trying to balance those two aspects.

Germany's Rolls-Royce goes electric
The Maybach name has great historical significance for Mercedes. Wilhelm Maybach was one of the earliest automotive engineers. He designed the first Mercedes-branded car for the Daimler company (now Daimler-Benz), but struck out on his own after a falling out with company management. His eponymous company built Zeppelin engines, luxury cars, and, during World War II, engines for German military vehicles.
Daimler-Benz took control of Maybach in the 1960s, but left the passenger-car business dormant. Mercedes then revived the Maybach name in the early 2000s as a competitor to the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, both of which are owned by rival German automakers. Given Wilhelm Maybach's history with Mercedes, it essentially brought things full circle.
The 21st-century Maybach brand started out with standalone models in the form of the Maybach 57 and Maybach 62 sedans (as well as the stunning Exelero prototype), but production ended in 2012 amid dwindling sales. Mercedes then switched to making Maybach-branded versions of existing models like the S-Class sedan and GLS-Class SUV, a pattern that continues with the Maybach EQS SUV.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is the middle child of Mercedes' electric SUV lineup, slotting between the entry-level EQB and the flagship EQS SUV, and targeting electric luxury SUVs like the Audi E-Tron, BMW iX, and Cadillac Lyriq. Like the EQS, the EQE SUV is based on an existing sedan, hence the "SUV" suffix. In a previous first drive, we found the EQE sedan to be a good balance between luxury and livability, giving the SUV version a lot to live up to.

GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay for EVs, go all-in on Android integration

General Motors plans to stop using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone connectivity in future EVs in favor of infotainment systems developed with Google based on the company's tech. First reported by Reuters, the move is surprising given the popularity of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which allow users to project content from smartphones onto a car's touchscreen, bypassing the native infotainment systems.

GM's decision to stop offering these systems on future EVs, starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, could help the automaker capture more customer data, Reuters noted, providing insight into how vehicles are used. But it will likely be detrimental to the user experience, as customers will have to learn to use built-in infotainment systems, rather than the smartphone interfaces they're used to.
