McLaren confirms entry-level P13 and track-only P1 by the end of 2015

mclaren p1 production ends drifting

Over the last year, I’ve fallen in love with McLaren. I loved its now-fated MP4-12C. I love its hyper hybrid P1 halo car. And now I love its 650S.

With these cars, I figured the portion of my heart dedicated to British supercars was full. Turns out, though, I am going to need at least a few more ventricles: McLaren has confirmed both a track-focused version of the P1 and a new entry-level model – both before the end of 2015.

We’ve been reporting for a while now rumors surrounding both a new starter McLaren, codenamed the P13, and a more mental P1. We didn’t know, though, if – or when – they’d be released. Now we know.

The P13 – I suspect that name won’t stick – will carry the lowest price point of any current McLaren but will continue the brand’s commitment to, as McLaren itself put it, “ excellence, performance, and innovation.”

“P13 will be a comfortable, usable, and beautiful mid-engined two seater sports car, built around a carbon fiber chassis,” McLaren revealed in a press release. “It will be available in more than one derivative and once fully on sale.”

If you’re wondering what derivatives McLaren is referring to, I take that to mean it’ll be offered in both Coupe and Spider versions, just like the 650S before it.

And what of the track-only P1? Details are slim. But McLaren has said the car will only be available to the current 375 owners of the road-going P1 and that it’ll be the fastest and rarest McLaren to date. Yowza.

So there you have it. Two new McLarens are coming. One you absolutely cannot even consider buying (unless you have a P1 (if you do, call me)), and one you probably can weigh against the new 2016 Audi R8.
