In June, Mercedes-Benz promised that its upcoming AMG GT would be nothing less than a true “true lightweight,” and now the German automaker has narrowed it down a bit.
Mercedes-Benz Passion, an enthusiast website with inside access at Mercedes, is reporting that the manufacturer’s newest grand tourer will have a curb weight of less than 1,600 kg (3,527 pounds).
The old SLS AMG GT, which the AMG GT is replacing, weighed 3,574 pounds. The new car’s nanoslide-coated, 4.0-liter biturbo V8 does make less than the SLS’ 583 horsepower (503 hp), so let’s hope the weight drop is significant. The old car could do 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds.
Mercedes-Benz Passion had a chance to test the GT at the car’s development center in Sindelfingen, and they said that while the design still has some work to do, ugly it is not.
From their accounts, the AMG GT has a “long hood, [and a] crisp rear with pronounced shoulders. The back part [is] even a little reminiscent of a Porsche 928. Unusual is the steeply sloping windshield, but this is intentional and hood continues to push forward.”
Another entry in Tire Shredding Weekly (unfortunately not a real publication) is a report by Auto Motor und Sport. The dispatch details a statement by Daimler design chief Gorden Wagner, who says Mercedes is working on an entry-level AMG GT that will follow the AMG GT S.
The detuned GT would obviously be less powerful than the standard model, but we’ll cross our fingers for a maniacal Black Series version in the future.
The Mercedes AMG GT goes on sale in March 2015, but will be unveiled online September 9th of this year. Its public debut will come in October at the Paris Motor Show.
