Mercedes-Benz warns Tesla that it’s preparing an electric luxury sedan

Tesla Motors needs to sit up and take notice, according to Mercedes-Benz. The Stuttgart-based company is designing a luxurious, all-electric sedan that will have the Model S in its crosshairs.

Mercedes previously revealed that the yet-unnamed sedan will be “dangerously fast,” even in its most basic state of tune. Properly configured, it will be among the top three fastest members of the Mercedes lineup; in fact, some variants might even be eligible for an AMG emblem. However, it will be designed with practicality in mind, and it will take the form of a large four-door sedan equipped with four seats.

The sedan will ride on a modular and scaleable platform that’s expected to underpin at least four electric models — including two crossovers — before the turn of the decade. An electric motor mounted over each axle will provide all-wheel drive, and a sizable battery pack located right under the passenger compartment will give the car a maximum driving of about 310 miles.

Mercedes stresses that it’s not trying to take out Tesla, but it says its American rival should be prepared for a tussle.

“It’ll be in a price bracket similar to the Tesla Model S, have a similar cruising range, but it’ll be a Mercedes, so I think Tesla probably have good reason to be concerned about it,” explained David McCarthy, the communications manager of Mercedes’ Australian division, in an interview with Australian website Motoring.

Company insiders told Motoring that Mercedes will preview its upcoming sedan with a concept that will debut this fall during the Paris Auto Show. Tesla will have time to prepare for the onslaught, because the EV won’t make the transition from a concept to a production model until 2018 at the earliest.

Mercedes-Benz isn’t the only company that Tesla needs to worry about. Porsche isn’t shy about admitting that it’s in the process of developing a high-performance electric sedan that will share more than a passing resemblance to the striking Mission E concept that bowed in Germany last fall. The yet-unnamed model is expected to arrive before 2020.

2023 Tesla Roadster: Everything we know about the electric car
Tesla Roadster front view

Teslas are already known for being sleek and fast, but there's an even sleeker and even faster model on the way -- Tesla is reviving the beloved Telsa Roadster. The original Tesla Roadster was the company's first car and was essentially a Tesla powertrain in the body of a Lotus Elise. But the new Roadster is its own thing -- and it's been designed from the ground up.

The new car was first announced as a concept all the way back in 2017 and was originally set to be available starting in 2020. That, obviously, didn't happen. But that doesn't mean we've forgotten about what's set to be the coolest Tesla yet. Here's everything you need to know about what we now hope is the 2023 Tesla Roadster.
2023 Tesla Roadster design
The 2023 Tesla Roadster is set to be the most stylish Tesla yet, at least based on the concepts we've seen so far. It'll have an aerodynamic two-door coupe design and a low center of gravity, giving it a sporty and modern look. The car will come with four seats, allowing for more passengers than the original Roadster's two-seater setup, however, we're not expecting the rear two seats to be particularly roomy. The car will also have more aggressive styling than the previous model and 19-inch wheels.

Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV first drive review: ’90s look, cutting-edge tech
Front three quarter view of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV.

Mercedes-Benz is one of the oldest automakers in existence, but it's been among the quickest to launch a lineup of electric cars. It may not have the freshness of a startup, but what it does have are actual cars to sell to customers.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is the middle child of Mercedes' electric SUV lineup, slotting between the entry-level EQB and the flagship EQS SUV, and targeting electric luxury SUVs like the Audi E-Tron, BMW iX, and Cadillac Lyriq. Like the EQS, the EQE SUV is based on an existing sedan, hence the "SUV" suffix. In a previous first drive, we found the EQE sedan to be a good balance between luxury and livability, giving the SUV version a lot to live up to.
