Mercedes-Benz G-Class won’t fade away, but may lose weight with 2017 updates

In an automotive world full of change, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is as consistent as the quantum transitions of caesium-133.

However, even a cult-classic former military vehicle like the G-Class needs a few updates eventually and, according to Autocar, Mercedes has some big plans in store for the 2017 model year.

Also known as the Gaelaendewagen or “G-wagen” for short, the 35-year-old SUV will reportedly retain its current chassis, but go on an aluminum diet and get a wider track for increased stability.

New suspension is also part of the plan. The G-Class’ military pedigree and off-road capability may have won plaudits in the past, but modern SUVs have to perform on tarmac as well.

Technology has also become more important for shoppers, so the 2017 G-Class will likely get more infotainment and safety systems than the current model, and an updated interior that’s more in line with what Mercedes offers in other models.

The G-Class may receive a styling update as well, although Mercedes would be remiss to mess with its iconic boxy look too much. Inspiration could be taken from the Ener-G-Force concept, which debuted at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show and was pitched as a next-generation G-Class preview.

The current G-Class is one of the most unusual vehicles on the market, which is both a good and a bad thing. Redesigning it will broaden appeal and increase sales, but hopefully none of the current model’s character will be lost in the process.

Mercedes-Benz’s brawny G-Wagen will get an electric makeover
2019 mercedes benz g550 review fullwide

The boxy, heavy Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a throwback to a bygone era, when off-road capability was more important in an SUV than connectivity or gas mileage. Yet this backward-looking Benz, known to fans as the G-Wagen, will soon get an electric powertrain.

Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler, confirmed the electric G-Wagen in a speech at the Automobilwoche Kongress in Berlin, Mercedes spokesperson Sascha Pallenberg said in a tweet. However, no other details have been given. Mercedes plan to launch 10 electric cars by the end of 2022, but it's unclear if the electric G-Class will be among them.
