Surprise! Leak reveals plethora of new Porsches

porsches 2014 plans revealed in leaked presentation slides porsche macan red
A leaked Porsche presentation reveals the German performance brand isn't completely giving up on manual transmissions.

Porsche might want to look into hiring Richard Nixon’s plumbers.

Slides from what was reportedly a Porsche dealer meeting in Atlanta were leaked to and they reveal every new Porsche due out over the next nine months.

Porsche will apparently continue the expansion of the 911 lineup with a new Targa and Targa S. Unlike the last two versions, which had sliding glass roofs, the 991-based Targa will have a removable center roof panel and fixed rear hatch, just like Targas of old.

Unlike those older cars, the new Targa will also have a “fully automatic roof system,” eliminating the need to manually remove the roof panel. Mechanically, the car will be based on the hardtop Carrera and Carrera S. It’s expected to debut at the 2014 Detroit auto show.

One of the most controversial upcoming Porsches is the Macan compact crossover. We were already expecting it at the 2013 Los Angeles auto show, but a few important details have surfaced with this leak.

The Macan will reportedly come with two engine options: a 3.0-liter turbo in the Macan S and a 3.6-liter in the redundantly-named Macan Turbo. They will probably both be V6s, although the presentation sent to Jalopnik didn’t explicitly say that. Both cars will come with Porsche’s PDK double-clutch automatic transmission.

The Macan S will start at $52,000, and the Macan Turbo will start at $75,000. Porsche may also add a base model at a later date, as it did with the Cayenne.

Wrapping up the Porsche model blitz are the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS.

These will be more driver-focused versions of Porsche’s entry level sports cars. They’ll each get 15 more horsepower and – joy of joys – manual transmissions as standard equipment (PDK will be optional). They’ll also get Porsche’s PASM stability control, and some subtle exterior and interior changes.

Both cars will be unveiled at the Beijing auto show, and will hit showrooms in mid-2014 with a base price of about $75,000 each.

2014 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Porsche fans.

Porsche will use discarded F1 tech for a new hybrid supercar, report claims
porsche hybrid supercar with f1 powertrain report 918 spyder

Since the 918 Spyder went out of production in 2015, Porsche has been without a flagship supercar. But a new report claims Porsche is working on something even more extreme than the 845-horsepower plug-in hybrid. Autocar reports that Porsche wants to use a discarded Formula One hybrid powertrain in a 918 successor.

Porsche hasn't been involved in Formula One for decades, so where did it get an F1 powertrain from? The automaker recently considered an F1 comeback, and engine development got far enough along that the leftovers from the program could be used for a road-going supercar, Autocar claims. Autosport previously reported that Porsche had 40 people working on an F1 powertrain program, with the goal of entering the series in 2021.

Fiat-Chrysler pressured dealers to take extra inventory to boost sales numbers
2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon

Recently Fiat-Chrysler reported 40,000 vehicles backed up in storage lots, which was causing tension with its dealers. Back in 1980 and again in 2009, during its two worst financial crises, Chrysler used a tactic called "sales banks" to inflate their sales numbers. Instead of constantly slowing and speeding production to meet variations in demand, Their factories work at full capacity year-round. Any unsold cars are “banked” in storage lots until demand picks up, and dealers are generally pushed into taking as many of these cars as possible.

Investors and financial analysts frown upon the practice of sales banks because it can look like the company has falsified inventory figures. Dealers across the country do not like the practice because it can pressure them to take on greater numbers of vehicles than they want. Some dealers do see an upside to this practice, since if they need a certain model or trim package in a hurry odds are it will just be sitting there waiting for them, even if the manufacturer may try and use that vehicle as bait to unload more banked inventory.
