Watch as Volkswagen’s ID R racer wins the ultimate EV bragging rights

The Volkswagen ID R once again set the benchmark for electric-car performance. Built for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, where it destroyed the overall record in 2018, the ID R has now set a lap record for electric cars at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife. Driver Romain Dumas piloted the ID R around the 12.8-mile track in 6 minutes, 5.33 seconds, at an average speed of 206.96 kph (128.5 mph).

Unlike at Pikes Peak, the ID R did not set an overall record at the Nürburgring. The Porsche 919 Evo hybrid still holds that record, which stands at 5:19.55. But VW did beat the previous electric-car lap record by 40.5 seconds. That record was set in 2017 by the Nio EP9, a Chinese electric supercar that was ostensibly a production vehicle. But just 16 EP9s were made, and each carried a $1.4 million price tag.

The ID R is unambiguously a race car. It’s powered by two electric motors — one for each axle — making a combined 680 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The motors, battery pack, and other mechanical components are tightly packaged under bodywork that looks shrink-wrapped onto the chassis, leaving very little room for the driver. Since the ID R was designed for Pikes Peak’s high-altitude conditions, modifications were made to the car’s aerodynamic package for the Nürburgring. Engineers also made some tweaks to increase the top speed from 149 mph to 168 mph. Dumas, who also drove the ID R at Pikes Peak, is a four-time winner of the Nürburgring 24 Hours race, so he knew the place pretty well.

Onboard – ID.R record-breaking run on the Nordschleife

“To be a record holder on the Nordschleife makes me unbelievably proud,” Dumas said in a statement. “For me, this is the best and most difficult race track in the world.”

After conquering Pikes Peak, and setting a record at England’s Goodwood Hill Climb, Volkswagen was eager to find another challenge for the ID R. Known as the “Green Hell,” the Nürburgring is the perfect place for automakers seeking bragging rights. The track is considered to be one of the toughest in the world, and lap records have become a yardstick for the hottest production cars. VW felt a ‘Ring lap record would give similar credibility to its electric-car tech.

“As further proof of its impressive performance capabilities, Volkswagen’s e-mobility can now proudly call itself ‘Nürburgring-approved,'” Volkswagen Group boss Herbert Diess said in a statement.

None of the ID R’s tech will make it to production, but VW believes lessons learned from the race car will help the development of future electric cars. The ID R also serves as a high-speed promotional tool as Volkswagen launches an entire family of electric cars over the next few years.

Inside the lab teaching Volkswagen’s born-again Bus how to drive itself
volkswagen unveils argo ai powered id buzz ad electric van

Previewed by the heritage-laced ID.Buzz concept, Volkswagen's born-again Bus will arrive in 2022 with a few cool tech tricks up its sleeve. It will be fully electric, it will ride on the MEB architecture already found under the EVs like the ID.3 and the ID.4, and it will spawn an autonomous shuttle scheduled to start carrying passengers in 2025. Argo A.I. is helping Volkswagen teach the Bus how to drive itself, and Digital Trends got an inside look at the project.

Volkswagen unveiled the first ID.Buzz-based prototype on the sidelines of the 2021 Munich auto show. Fully draped in camouflage to mask its final design, the van is fitted with an armada of sensors, radars, cameras, microphones, and lidars that paint a digital picture of the world around it. Argo A.I. — which Volkswagen and Ford jointly own a stake in — argues its technology is highly advanced: its lidar can detect and avoid potholes by scanning the road surface, and it can see objects that are about 1,300 feet away, even if they're dark (like a black car). Powering this hardware requires tremendous computing power, several backup systems, and a mammoth amount of data.

2022 bmw i4 electric sedan unveiled with 530 horsepower

BMW introduced the i4, its smartest and most futuristic sedan to date. Fully electric, connected, and powerful, it's a toned-down version of the Concept i4 developed to give buyers a battery-powered alternative to the 3 Series.

Like the design study, which was presented online in March 2020, the production model wears a giant grille that will fuel chatter for months on end. Some will love it, some will hate it; what's certain is that it won't go unnoticed. BMW is applying this styling cue across its range, and its market research reveals buyers like the more assertive look.

2021 volkswagen id4 review id 4 front three quarter

The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 isn’t the first affordable electric car, but VW believes it will be the one that finally gets the world to go electric.

That’s pretty ambitious, considering the ID.4 only exists because of the Volkswagen diesel scandal. When it was caught cheating on emissions tests, VW pivoted to EVs to save face, but this is much more than a PR effort. Volkswagen is throwing the full weight of its manufacturing infrastructure and dealership network behind EVs, and says the ID.4 will compete for sales with popular gasoline vehicles like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
