What a bargain: only $7.5-million for a stripped-down, lighter-weight version of the LaFerrari hypercar

Update: Ferrari said on May 8 that the Autocar story is false and no new/modified version of their new supercar is in the works. Original story:

Ferrari only plans to build 499 examples of its latest supercar, the LaFerrari. Although the V12 hybrid supercar runs more than $1.7-million, Ferrari has already sold out the production run (we were No. 500 in line, unfortunately) .

But fear not, Ferrari fans, a lightweight limited edition of the LaFerrari is in the works. What can Ferrari do to the already extreme LaFerrari to make it more extreme? How about cut out some weight and re-sculpt the body a bit?

Speaking with Autocar, LaFerrari chief designer, Flavio Manzoni, said, “when we were producing the original design proposals for LaFerrari, there was one proposal that I thought was especially beautiful. So we decided to keep that one back for something truly special in the future.”

Only 10 “limited edition” LaFerraris will be built. The estimated price tag? Between $4.5-million and $7.5-million. For that hefty sum, buyers will get a LaFerrari that weighs around 2,200-pounds – some 500-pounds less than the standard version.

Power will likely remain the same as the standard LaFerrari at 950 horsepower but acceleration times will undoubtedly drop due to the weight savings.

This plan is all well and good but it almost seems like a waste to us. Truly, how many of these $7.5-million hypercars will actually be driven? We wager, rather few if any. Most will likely remain static garage trophies for the lucky few who can afford them.
