As long as Firefox 3 Release Candidate 2 (RC2), its new beta, is well-received, Mozilla is hoping to release its updated Firefox 3 browser to the world somewhere around the middle of June. That’s old news. What’s straight out of the box is the fact that they’re hoping it will create a world record for the number of downloads of an application in a single day possibly as many as five million.
The fact that no such Guinness World Record currently exists has to stand in their favour, of course, but they anticipate a minimum of 1.6 million downloads, and are encouraging many more by getting fans to sign themselves up on the Spread Firefox site, add Firefox badges to sites and even host download parties – a sort of MoveOn.org of the open source world.
Release Candidate 1 did well and has now been superseded by RC2.
