Acer Ferrari 1200

When you start hearing analogies between the hum of a computer processor and the roar of an F1 car, you know you’re in the sludgy depths of some pretty thick PR speak. So it goes with Acer’s new Ferrari 1200 notebook, which, according to Acer, has a “unique ventilation design” that “echoes the exhaust pipes of F1 cars.” Right.

The rest of the Ferrari machismo packed into this ‘book, we can believe. That includes design touches like a carbon fiber cover for strength without the weight of metal, an anodized metal touch pad that mimics a Ferrari’s brake pedal, and a soft-touch coating on the inside that’s inspired by a Ferrari interior. There’s even an included Bluetooth mouse that follows the same design cues.

Under the hood, you might find comparisons to Asus’ similarly-branded Lamborghini VX3 more apt than to a real-life Testarossa. That includes an AMD Turion X2 Ultra dual-core CPU, an AMD M780G graphics chip, and 4GB of DDR2 memory. There’s also a 12.1-inch LED-backlit CrystalBrite LCD, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a slot-loading DVD drive, which can actually be uncommon on a notebook this size.

The elusive price tag for Acer’s Ferrari-branded notebook hasn’t yet come to light, but considering that the previous-gen Ferrari 1000 and 1100 both ran for $1,999, we can say we have a pretty good idea where they’re headed. More details are available in Acer’s original press release.

If you aren't ready to buy a full-fledged laptop, a Chromebook is a great alternative since they're usually cheaper while still coming in the same body as a traditional laptop. The Acer Chromebook 314 is a great example, and while it won't win any awards for high-end specifications, it's a solid device and a great budget option if you want something basic. Luckily, Best Buy has a great deal, bringing it down to $169 from $269, making it more affordable.

Why you should buy the Acer Chromebook 314
At 14-inches, you might not expect the Acer 314 to have much going for it, but surprisingly, it has a touch screen with up to 10-finger multitouch, which is a nice little addition, although it would have been nice if it was convertible to use in tablet mode. Nonetheless, the overall build quality is sturdy, with little to no flex on the keyboard, and battery life should see you up to around 12 hours or so, depending on your usage, which is great. It's also worth noting that the screen not only uses an IPS panel, which gives you better color reproduction and viewing angles, but it can also hit 300 nits of peak brightness, meaning you can use it in a well-lit room without too much issue.
