AMD’s Radeon RX 6700 XT is rumored to launch in March with 12GB of memory

Gamers eager for AMD to release more affordable graphics cards from the Radeon RX 6000 series won’t have too much longer to wait. The Radeon RX 6900 XT and Radeon RX 6800 XT only debuted late last year, but rumors of a March launch for the Radeon RX 6700 XT may actually prove to be accurate. This could give gamers an alternative to Nvidia’s more budget-oriented GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti cards.

According to a listing on the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) spotted by Komachi_Ensaka, partner Gigabyte has registered six Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics cards. This suggests that a launch may be imminent, though the listing did not give any specific timing for when that could occur. The cards are listed with 12GB of GDDR6 memory, down from the 16GB available on AMD’s Radeon RX6800 XT. The reduced memory is to be expected, given that the 6700 XT is a more affordable model in the 6000 series lineup.

The models listed with the EEC include the GV-R67XT-12GD-B, GV-R67XTAORUS E-12GD, GV-R67XTGAMING OC-12GD, GV-R67XTGAMING-12GD, GV-R67XTEAGLE OC-12GD, and GV R67XTEAGLE-12GD. According to PC Gamer, this means that Gigabyte is aiming to launch one premium Aorus cards, two gaming cards, two Eagle cards, and a reference design from the manufacturer. It’s believed that at least two of those models will be overclocked.

Prior rumors suggested that the 6700 XT cards will be built on AMD’s Navi 22 XT graphics architecture, which will come with 40 compute units and 2,560 stream processors alongside a 192-bit memory bus. Clock speeds are still unknown at the time. This means that the 6700 XT will come with 20 fewer compute units and 1,280 less stream processors than the Radeon RX 6800. It’s speculated that the Radeon RX 6700 XT will deliver performance comparable to the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti from Nvidia.

Pricing information on the 6700 XT was not revealed, but it seems likely that these new cards could be priced competitively, with AMD aiming to compete against Nvidia’s entry-level RTX 3000 series cards. For comparison, AMD’s Radeon RX 6800 is priced at $580, and the company positioned its GPU as a direct competitor to rival Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3070. With the Radeon 6700 XT, AMD could be gunning for the same market as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti. The RTX 3060 Ti, for reference, debuted at $399. We can likely expect pricing to be around or under $500 with the latest Radeon RX 6700 XT.

Given the ongoing GPU shortage, it’s likely that the Radeon RX 6700 XT will be subject to the same fate when it debuts.

Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti vs. AMD RX 7900 XT: Two odd choices for your next GPU
The RTX 4070 Ti graphics card on a pink background.

Nvidia's RTX 4070 Ti is here, which means that the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT has a direct competitor now. Comparing AMD to Nvidia is never overly straightforward, but it can be done. Benchmark results speak for themselves, and we've got plenty of those, all based on our own thorough testing of both cards.

While the RTX 4070 Ti and the RX 7900 XT are not some of the best graphics cards on the current market, they certainly fill important roles by offering gaming at a more affordable price -- at least in theory. Below, we'll talk about which of these GPUs is the better option if you're looking to upgrade your PC.

AMD RX 7900 XTX: we tested ray tracing in 14 games, with mixed results
Radeon logo on the RX 7900 XTX.

AMD's recently launched RX 7900 XTX has received a warm reception, mainly on the back of the value it offers compared to Nvidia's competing RTX 4080. One area where Nvidia still has a lead, though, is ray tracing. AMD is lacking in the ray tracing department, but the RX 7900 XTX has made some big strides compared to the previous generation.

In the last-gen battle, ray tracing was a non-option on most AMD GPUs. Nvidia still clearly has a lead, but I wanted to look deeper into the ray tracing experience on AMD's latest generation. It's a massive improvement compared to last-gen cards, even if there are still some significant hurdles for Team Red.

AMD responds to GPU overheating issues with RX 7900 XTX
RX 7900 XTX installed in a test bench.

As the number of AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX owners reporting overheating grows, the company has responded. Initially, complaints were met with a simple statement that temperatures of 110 degrees Celsius were normal and not a cause for concern.

That meant requests to return AMD RX 7900 XTX reference graphics cards were denied. While reaching 110 degrees Celsius might be acceptable, thermal throttling is unexpected behavior. AMD is now asking anyone experiencing throttling to contact AMD customer support for assistance. This isn't the first problem with AMD's latest GPU so hopefully, this is taken care of quickly.
