Apple Expands Recycling Efforts

In what looks to be a tie in to tomorrow’s Earth Day, Apple today announced they were expanding a computer recycling program in which they will offer free computer take-back and recycling with the purchase of a new Mac beginning in June. Also announced was that their newest iPods are now RoHS compliant in California and Europe.

The expanded recycling program, said Apple, will let consumers who buy a new Mac through the Apple Store online or Apple’s retail stores will receive free shipping and disposal of their old computer. Equipment recycled through this program is done so domestically, with no hazardous materials being shipped overseas. The extension of this program stems from a 2001 start which has seen a reported 90 percent of electronic equipment collected recycled.

As for the iPods, Apple said their fifth generation, nano and shuffle models are now fully compliant with the upcoming restrictions of hazardous substances (RoHS) in California and Europe, which are reportedly becoming global standards for environmental regulation.

“Apple is committed to supporting our customers and protecting the environment throughout the entire product life cycle, from purchase through to retirement,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in a statement. “Now we are making it even easier for Apple’s customers to safely and affordably recycle their used computers and iPods.”

Is Apple’s upcoming M4 Mac event still happening? I’m skeptical
Russian YouTuber Romancev768 with what is claimed to be a real M4 MacBook Pro unit.

Over the last few weeks, the endless stream of M4 MacBook Pro leaks has been almost inescapable. We’ve seen photos, unboxing videos, even M4 laptops reportedly going up for sale way ahead of time. Ye.t despite all that, there’s been one thing that has stopped me from fully believing that these leaks are legitimate -- despite a well-known reporter claiming that they’re authentic.

That’s because in all the leaks we’ve seen, the box of the M4 MacBook Pro has come with the same black-and-gray wallpaper that Apple used for its M3 line of MacBook Pros. It’s something that has bugged me ever since I first noticed it. But what if the use of an old wallpaper isn't proof that these leaks are fakes, but is actually a clue about what Apple is about to do next?

Apple is hoping to one-up Meta with its own smart glasses
Person wearing Meta Orion smart glasses.

Apple has been stuck in an innovation rut for the past few years. Aside from the Vision Pro headset — which expectedly didn’t gain a mass reception — the company hasn’t made any notable hardware strides apart from its bread-and-butter mobility and computing portfolio. That could change in the next few years.

According to Bloomberg, Apple’s Vision Pro team is working on smart glasses to tackle the challenge presented by a resurgent Meta. The social media giant has already scored an early lead with the well-received Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, which have steadily received meaningful social and AI upgrades.
