Apple Suggests Mac Antivirus

Remember when Mac owners were so smug about malware because they were safe? Well, wave goodbye to those days. Now even Apple is urging Mac owners to use antivirus software, largely as a response to booby-trapped sites that can infect visitors, the BBC reports.

The company has posted a note on its support site, going as far as to recommend some products to be used together.

"Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult."

So who gets a bite of the Apple for antivirus? McAfee VirusScan, Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 11, and Intego VirusBarrier X5 are the company’s preferences.

So far, most viruses have been aimed at Windows computers, largely because there are so many of them, but viruses targeting Mac OS X have started popping up.

Yesterday, Apple revealed its long-awaited Mac mini redesign to the world, and it’s fair to say that the M4 chip is the least exciting thing about it. The micro computer’s new look is so striking that it’s making me reconsider my previously skeptical stance toward the Mac mini.

But amid all the online chatter surrounding the Mac mini’s refreshed design, there’s been a current of criticism pointed at its power button. You see, Apple has moved it from the back of the device -- where it previously lived -- to the underside of the computer, meaning you’ll probably need to tip it over every time you want to switch on your Mac mini. It’s drawn scathing comparisons to the Magic Mouse’s upside-down charging port, and that’s never a good thing.

Apple's big week of Mac announcements continued this morning with the unveiling of the M4 Mac mini, featuring a new chip, a revamped design, and some important hardware changes. Importantly, it marks the first time the Mac mini has seen a major redesign since the unibody model launched in 2010.

The footprint is now just 5 by 5 inches, taking up less than half the space on your desk. To be fair, it's slightly taller now at two inches (up from 1.4 inches), a bit like a shrunken down Mac Studio, which is 7.7 by 7.7 inches. The new Mac mini is also significantly lighter at just a pound and a half. The previous Mac mini weighed 2.6 pounds.

Just prior to Apple unveiling the new Mac mini in a special announcement this week, Amazon appears to have accidentally spilled the beans.

Spotted by MacRumors on Monday, the new listing on Amazon’s U.S. website for the just-unveiled M4 iMac includes a section titled “Which Mac is right for you?”
