Included with every new iMac since 2009, Apple’s wireless Magic Mouse certainly has its lovers and haters, with the former comfortable with its low-profile design and array of multi-touch offerings, and the latter having ditched it long ago in favor of a more traditionally styled device from a third-party maker.

According to recently published papers [12] filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Cupertino company has designed a new version of its Magic Mouse, likely to be called….wait for it….Magic Mouse 2.

A refreshed version of its $69 wireless keyboard also looks to be on its way, though its new name isn’t currently known (wireless keyboard 2, perhaps?).

The updated devices were revealed in FCC papers published on Friday, with AppleInsider spotting additional documents stating that the hardware that’s been submitted for testing “represents the final version of the equipment as it will be released to the market.”

Particular alterations of note include the introduction of non-removable batteries into both devices, doing away with the need for AA batteries. Spotted by SlashGear, the internal power source will be rechargeable via USB. You should be able to get some decent use out of the devices before having to stick them on charge, too, as both devices are shifting from Bluetooth 2.0 to Bluetooth LE 4.2, offering greater energy efficiency as well as security.

Drawings submitted to the FCC by Apple only show the underside of the devices, so we’re unable to say whether the overall external design has been altered. The mouse, for example, may have had its shape and profile tinkered with, while the keyboard’s keys could conceivably have been given a thinner design like those on the company’s recently launched 12-inch MacBook.

It’s not clear when the new hardware will hit the market, though it’s perfectly possible it could land with the anticipated rollout of revamped iMacs next month, possibly on or close to September 9 when new mobile devices from Apple are expected to be announced.

The Magic Mouse has been fixed, but not by Apple

The design of Apple's Magic Mouse continues to be a major complaint among Mac users, a blight on Apple's otherwise fantastic design choices. The ergonomics are inhuman, it still uses a Lightning charging port (even on the new M3 iMac), and it can't be charged while being used.

However, an engineer has introduced his design concept that would not only solve the charging issue on the Magic Mouse but also make the design ergonomic and comfortable for natural handling.

A new iMac Pro could still launch. Here’s what I want from it
An Apple iMac Pro in a dark room flanked by two monitors, one on either side of it.

A week ago, a shocking report emerged: Apple apparently had no plans for a larger iMac, potentially meaning the iMac Pro was dead and buried. However, opposition voices soon emerged, and the consensus now seems to be that Apple has only ruled out the 27-inch iMac, not the idea of a larger all-in-one entirely.

In fact, just yesterday, Bloomberg Mark Gurman reiterated his previous claims that a larger iMac is still in the works. That’s an exciting rumor because I’ve felt for years that the iMac isn’t quite living up to its potential. If a larger, more powerful version really is still in development, it could be a seriously impressive device. Here’s everything I want to see from it.

Apple just dashed our iMac hopes and dreams

Apple has confirmed it has no plans to release a 27-inch iMac in the immediate future. The news comes on the same day that reviews for Apple's 24-inch iMac M3 and MacBook Pro M3 went live, with the company urging pro users who had been waiting for a 27-inch iMac update to go with a Mac Studio or Mac Pro instead.

An Apple representative confirmed that a 27-inch iMac with Apple silicon won't be arriving soon to The Verge. Apple last updated the 27-inch iMac in 2020, just a few months before Apple silicon was released to the world. It never saw Apple Silicon, instead being stuck on older Intel chips. Apple discontinued the product in 2021, eventually delisting it the next year.
