The portable Asus G501 gaming laptop equips Intel quad, Nvidia GTX 960M

Asus has announced its new G501 gaming laptop, a 15-inch rig which is now one of the thinnest at just eight-tenths of an inch thick. The non-touchscreen version of the laptop weighs as little as four and a half pounds.

The company notes that the product is ideal for “gaming on the go.” Because it’s thin and lightweight, users will have no problem traveling with the laptop. Additionally, it’s meant to be one of the quietest models on the market, thanks to Hyper Cool Technology.

Asus describes Hyper Cool Technology as a cooling system that uses two fans and copper heat-pipes to eliminate heat efficiently without loud noise. The CPU and the GPU of the laptop are cooled independently to ensure maximum efficiency. We’ve seen a similar technique in the previous G751, and it worked extremely well.

With its Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor, the laptop has enough power to support all of today’s demanding games. However, the highlight of the G501 is its graphics. The product has Nvidia’s new GeForce GTX 960M graphics with 4GB of GDDR5 video memory. This power-efficient GPU is what lets the G501 achieve gaming-grade performance in a thin profile.

There’s even an optional 4K panel. However, you probably shouldn’t buy that version, as 4K resolution is too much for any mobile graphics chip to handle in most modern games.

In addition to the announcement of the G501, Asus has confirmed that it will be providing new graphics options to its ROG G751 and G551 series. The ROG G751JL is now available with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M graphics card with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and ASUS TurboMaster GPU overclocking technology. An Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 video memory has been integrated into the ROG GL551JW.

As spring rolls in, gamers have plenty to look forward to from Asus. The company says that consumers can expect the G501 to begin shipping in the U.S. in April, and the G751JL and GL551JW are available today.

Trying to buy a GPU in 2023 almost makes me miss the shortage
Two AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards on a pink surface.

The days of the GPU shortage are long over, but somehow, buying a GPU is harder than ever -- and that sentiment has very little to do with stock levels. It's just that there are no obvious candidates when shopping anymore.

In a generation where no single GPU stands out as the single best graphics card, it's hard to jump on board with the latest from AMD and Nvidia. I don't want to see another GPU shortage, but the state of the graphics card market is far from where it should be.
This generation is all over the place

This tiny ThinkPad can’t quite keep up with the MacBook Air M2
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 3 rear view showing lid and logo.

While the laptop industry continues to move toward 14-inch laptops and larger, the 13-inch laptop remains an important category. One of the best is the Apple MacBook Air M2, with an extremely thin and well-built chassis, great performance, and incredibly long battery life.

Lenovo has recently introduced the third generation of its ThinkPad X1 Nano, one of the lightest laptops we've tested and a good performer as well. It's stiff competition, but which of these two diminutive laptops stands apart?
