Asus Designo MS Monitor

Asus Designo MS MonitorThe Asus name may not be the first that comes to mind when you think of high fashion meeting consumer electronics, but not for lack of trying. With the Eee Seashell, the notoriously budget-focused Taiwanese company put aside its focus on price and injected some much-needed style into otherwise bland devices. And now it’s taking the same approach to monitors.

The Designo MS discards the basic black bezel other monitors routinely don in favor of a design that’s so clean and sophisticated, it might have come out of Cupertino with a bit more white plastic. The entire LCD panel sits in a slim 16.5mm-deep slab that stretches all the way down to the desk, sitting on its chin and eliminating the need for a traditional pedestal. On the back, a unique “ring stand” keeps the monitor propped upright, but also allows for adjustments with the press of one finger.

Asus also emphasizes the panel within the Designo, which boasts a 50,000:1 contrast ratio, 2ms response times, and full HD resolution in the top-of-the-line 23.6-inch widescreen model. The company also claims that power consumption has been reduced by 40 percent to just 33 watts, and 1 watt while on standby.

The company unveiled the Designo MS at Europe’s IFA show, suggesting a European launch in the near future, but pricing and availability have not yet been formally announced. More information, including specs on different Designo models ranging from 23.6 inches to 20.0 inches, can be found at Asus.

I replaced my PC with the Asus ROG Ally. Here’s what surprised me
Asus ROG Ally connected to the XG Mobile.

Ever since Asus announced its ROG Ally, there has been a frenzy of comparisons to the Steam Deck and other handheld devices. But one area where the ROG Ally is truly unique is that you can go beyond the hardware inside the device. Asus' XG Mobile promises more power over a single, chunky cable, and can transform the ROG Ally from a handheld into a full-fledged desktop. In theory, at least.

It works; pick up the XG Mobile, plug in the ROG Ally, and you have access to desktop levels of performance out of a tiny handheld. There's much more to this setup than performance, though, and the more I used the ROG Ally with the XG Mobile, the clearer that became.

Usually $1,000, this Samsung 43-inch 4K monitor is $500 this weekend
Samsung's 2023 Odyssey Neo G7 sitting on a table.

As the best graphics cards push further into the limits of what is technically possible, gaming monitor makers like Samsung are trying to get ahead of the game with things like the Odyssey Neo G7. A chunky gaming monitor, it has many interesting features if you want to play games on the cutting edge. While it's usually $1,000, Samsung has discounted it to just $500, which is pretty substantial.

Why you should buy the 43-inch Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 4K Gaming Monitor
This 43-inch version of the Odyssey Neo G7 is perfect for those who want to game on a relatively massive monitor. While 4k resolutions aren't as impressive as they used to be, what is impressive is that the Neo G7 can hit 144Hz on 4k. Of course, that means you'll have to grab some powerful GPU deals to run the screen at 144Hz 4k, such as the Nvidia RTX 4090 or the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. Luckily, the Neo G7 comes with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to help with screen tearing, so it will work with whichever GPU maker you end up going for; if you're not sure which one is better, be sure to check out our breakdown of FreeSync vs. G-Sync.
