Don’t call it a comeback: Asus intros new $299 netbook

We reported just last week that the netbook category was all but dead. This week, however, Asus is throwing us for a loop by introducing the Asus 1015E, a 10-inch netbook with a budget-friendly $299 price tag. According to Liliputing, this is the first netbook that Asus has released in over a year. So why release it now? Can we expect a sudden resurgence in the netbook market?

The 1015E is a departure from traditional netbook specs in that it is not powered by an Intel Atom processor. Instead, the 1015E packs an Intel Celeron 847 processor under the hood, which is much more powerful than the Atom chipset, but not as speedy as a mainstream notebook chip. It’s also the same processor powering Acer’s C7 Chromebook. The 1015E packs 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive under the hood and runs Windows 8. Plus, it comes with 32GB of cloud-based Asus WebStorage for free for three years.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the 1015E is it’s 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768, which is more akin to a standard notebook resolution. Screen resolution on netbooks with the same 10.1-inch display usually top out at 1024 x 600. With the emphasis on HD screens in tablets and computers, the sharper display might sway some to this machine, but it seems unlikely.

The Asus 1015E  is available with a 3-cell or 6-cell battery and weighs 2.4 pounds or 2.8 pounds, respectively. The company rates it for 7.5 hours with the larger battery and promises a 2-second wake from sleep and 14-day standby thanks to its Super Hybrid Engine II. The 1015E also features one USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, VGA, and Ethernet.

If a computer meets the size and price requirements of a netbook, but offers a better processor and a higher resolution display, is it still a netbook? We think so. Those 3.97 million netbooks shipping this year have to be coming from somewhere.

With Dell being one of the best laptop brands, you can’t really go wrong with any laptop from its stable. The Dell XPS 15 continues to be a great laptop. This model has a 13th-generation Intel Core i7-13700H processor while there’s 16GB of memory and 512GB of SSD storage. It looks great too with a 15.6-inch full HD+ screen with a 1920 x 1200 resolution, 500 nits of brightness, and anti-glare properties. The laptop has a great 92.9% screen-to-body ratio while the large touchpad and edge-to-edge backlit keyboard all add to the classiness. The enclosure is sculpted by a CNC machining process with the aluminum chassis looking elegant and pretty robust too. It's a great all-rounder that's well-suited to some light content creation, as well as taking to class, or just using on a daily basis as your main laptop.

Don’t need a MacBook Pro? Save $300 on the 15-inch MacBook Air
The screen of the MacBook Air M2.

For those who are having trouble deciding which of the latest models to buy from MacBook deals, here's an offer from Best Buy that may push you in its direction -- the 15-inch Apple MacBook Air M2 with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD for $999, following a $300 discount on its original price of $1,299. If you don't need the professional-level capabilities of the MacBook Pro, it's highly recommended that you take advantage of this bargain, but you have to act fast because there's no telling when it will get taken down.

Why you should buy the 15-inch Apple MacBook Air M2
The 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro M3 Max stands on top of our list of the best MacBooks, but if you prefer the lightness and quietness of the MacBook Air and you don't need the extreme power of the MacBook Pro, you're better off with the 15-inch Apple MacBook Air M2. Its design is very similar to its smaller counterpart, the 13-inch Apple MacBook Air M2, with the same flat panels, narrow bezels, and thin profile -- just 0.46 of an inch -- among other elements. However, the larger 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display makes a huge difference, especially if you'll be needing all the screen real estate that you can get for activities like building websites, managing spreadsheets, editing videos, and working on apps with complex menus.

Don’t wait for new GPUs. It’s safe to buy a gaming laptop now
Upcoming Nvidia RTX 40-series laptops over a black and green background.

If you've been planning to buy a gaming laptop, it seems that it might be best to shop now instead of waiting for new hardware. Although rumor has it that Nvidia might soon launch three new desktop GPUs, it appears that those graphics cards are unlikely to appear in laptops anytime soon. Is there any point in waiting for the RTX 40-series refresh if you're a laptop user? For various reasons, most likely not.

Various leakers have been sharing information about the rumored RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, and RTX 4080 Super for a while now. Considering that Nvidia is planning to deliver a "special address" at CES 2024, the general assumption is that this is when the company will officially announce the RTX 40-series refresh.
