Asus Preloads Boingo Wi-Fi Software on Eee PC Netbooks

Netbooks are all about portable connectivity, so it’s sort of surprising that so few netbooks ship with any sort of capability to latch onto anything but wide-open public hotspots. Computer maker Asus looks to change that, announcing it is preloading Boingo access software on selected Eee PC netbooks—and Asus customers also qualify for discounts on Boingo wireless service. Boingo membership provides access to more than 125,000 Wi-Fi hotspots around the world, including airports, major hotels, coffee shops, cafes, and other locations.

ASUS Eee PC 1201N

For now, Asus is rolling the software into its Asus Eee PC 1005PE, 1008P, and 1201N netbooks; it plans to bring the software to other models soon.

“With its simple-to-use software and global Wi-Fi service, Boingo is the perfect fit for ASUS Eee PC users, who are accustomed to a user-friendly, highly intuitive computing experience,” said Asus product marketing manager James Tung, in a statement.

Whether customers will see the Boingo software as a benefit or as so-called “crapware” remains to be seen. However, Asus’ deal does enable customers to get half off the first three months of Boingo Unlimited service; that normally runs $9.95 per month in the Americas, so that translates to just under a $15 benefit. Customers can also get half off the first month of a Boingo Global account; those run $59 per month for world wide Wi-Fi access.

The Nighthawk RAXE300 on a tabletop in a home.

While Wi-Fi 5 routers have been around for years, and most homes in America likely won't top out on the speeds that these routers support, upgrading to a Wi-Fi 6 router comes with many alluring benefits. You'll be able to get faster speeds — up to 9.6Gbps — if your home internet plan can support it, better security, and more manageability by being able to connect more devices to an access point.

To take advantage of the best features of Wi-Fi 6, you'll need to upgrade to a new router. Here are some of the best Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E routers that should be on the top of your shopping list.

These new Eero PoE devices are for serious Wi-Fi setups only
The Eero PoE 6 with the price listed.

At the annual Amazon hardware event, router company Eero has announced two new devices for serious connectivity: the Eero PoE 6 and Eero PoE Gateway. These are not for your average Wi-Fi setup.

PoE, or power over ethernet, is a way of bringing wireless connectivity to wired infrastructures, especially made for professional installers and businesses. The Eero PoE 6 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 access point that covers up to 2,000 square feet of space with connectivity, including connections for more than 100 devices. Eero says it can go "almost anywhere ethernet cable can be pulled," including being mounted flush to surfaces like walls or ceilings.

This dongle can bring a superfast Wi-Fi 6 connection to your old computer
The Netgear Nighthawk A8000 Wi Fi 6 adapter

To upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 you would customarily need to buy an entirely new laptop or replace the Wi-Fi card in your desktop. Netgear has come up with a clever way to avoid this. The Netgear Nighthawk A8000 adapter simply plugs into any USB slot and brings instant Wi-Fi 6 connectivity to your computer.

What it does is retroactively bring Wi-Fi 6 to older computers, allowing them to enjoy the same high bandwidth and speeds as brand-new top-of-the-line machines with Wi-Fi 6-capable receivers. It supports all three Wi-Fi bands -- 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz -- and can deliver blazing speeds of up to 1.2GBps, which is comparable to an ethernet connection. However, there is a catch.
