Close to the Metal Ep. 26: Nintendo Switch fills a gap in PC gaming

Love it or hate it, Nintendo is back with another console, and a loyal army of enthusiasts is once again clamoring for hands-on time with the form factor-shifting Switch. Among that crowd are PC gaming enthusiasts, and for good reason — Nintendo consoles have always filled a role that other consoles couldn’t, with a raft of exclusive titles across every genre, unmatched portability, and an intuitive design that encourages sharing and couch multiplayer.

The Mario franchise alone starts with platformers, and spreads out to everything from go-kart racing to the Olympic games, plus a number of successful RPG sagas that stretch back to the early days of Nintendo’s video game era. Add to that the incredibly successful Legend of Zelda titles and a library of Pokemon games, and you have a selection of exclusive titles that aren’t available anywhere else. On the other hand, Nintendo’s titles are divisive — either you love them, or you don’t care.

Hardware is another story. Nintendo’s mobile devices have always packed in top-notch battery life and unique form factors for on-the-go play. Having enough power while on the go is one of the toughest pieces of designing and manufacturing a gaming laptop, and few get it quite right. Sure, you can stream games in your own home, but on a long plane ride, a 3DS is the right choice.

Nintendo’s systems also fill a gap in the living room that computers are only beginning to explore. Games like Mario Kart and Wii Sports were so easy to pick up and play, they require almost no explanation, but their skill cap is higher than you’d imagine for such a simple game.

For the graphics card, there's an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 with 12GB of dedicated VRAM. You'll notice that this system lacks a 13th-generation processor and a RTX 40-Series card but it's still more than capable of handling the latest games and rivaling the best gaming PCs.

Walmart has one of the best gaming PC deals for anyone keen to save big while still being able to game well. Right now, you can buy the HP Victus 15L gaming desktop for $399 saving a huge $350 off the regular price of $749. Capable of playing plenty of the latest games if you don't mind tweaking the detail level, it's a great option for many. You'll need to be quick though as stock is running down fast.

Why you should buy the HP Victus 15L
The HP Victus 15L may not be one of the best gaming PCs with this kind of spec, but it's still worth considering if money is tight but your need for PC gaming is high. The system offers an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G processor, 8GB of memory, and 512GB of SSD storage. It also has an AMD RX6400 graphics card. This puts it on a par with the better-known Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650. In most games, you'll need to adjust settings to play the latest titles like Diablo IV but with older or less demanding titles like Fortnite, performance will be pretty good. It's all about tempering your expectations but there's a lot to like here.

If you've been enticed by games like Diablo 4 and Fortnite but are too scared off by the idea of spending hundreds of dollars on one of the best graphics cards, don't worry, HP has your back. While the Victus 15L usually goes for $830, this Prime Day deal from HP has been discounted to just $490 and will let you play the games above, although with a couple of caveats.

Why you should buy the HP Victus 15L
So how does the HP Victus 15L run Diablo 4 while being so cheap? It does it simply by using the Intel Arc A380, one of the first GPUs that Intel has made and is very entry-level. Since it's not the best graphics card out there, you'll have to make compromises in graphics if you want to maintain 60fps, which mostly means running at 1080p with low settings. You could also potentially bump that up to medium settings if you're ok with roughly 55 or so fps. That may seem bleak, but those frames aren't too bad, and the Arc A380 is great for budget gaming and doesn't mean you'll have to spend a ton on a gaming monitor since even cheap monitor deals will be able to utilize the Arc A380 fully. That said, if you're willing to pay a bit extra to get a more powerful GPU, the RTX 3050 upgrade for $160 will let you run Diablo 4 at ultra performance with around 65 frames per second, which is great. The ideal upgrade would be the RTX 3060 for $220, which will let you get some 2k gaming done, but it's not a must if you want a budget-oriented build.
