CyberPowerPC’s latest Fangbook fights tooth and nail to win the hearts of gamers

cyberpowerpc unveils fangbook iii hx6 100 gaming laptop
CyberPowerPC’s gear is hardly the top choice for hardcore gamers right now, but the gaming rig maker has a new ace up its sleeve. It’s called the Fangbook III HX6-100.

Over the top naming aside, the latest entry in the Fangbook series is just as flashy and powerful as virtually all its predecessors. As CyberPower puts it in the press release where it announces the PC, this gaming notebook “performs as hot as it looks, but knows when to cool its jets.”

Don’t get the wrong idea though. The HX6-100 doesn’t feature a fan-less design. That would be madness, considering that this system is designed to handle gaming. It’s no surprise, therefore, that it overlooks Intel’s leaner Core M Broadwell processors in favor of good old Haswell chips.

The new Fangbook has an Intel Core i7-4940MX Extreme chip clocked at 3.1GHz in its top configuration, and a 2.8GHz Core i7-4810MQ in the base model. To keep everything nice and cool, a “kickstand” automatically unfolds when the laptop is opened, allowing air to flow under the hood.

The kickstand allegedly boosts ergonomics too, slightly tilting the keyboard at an unusual angle. This may make it more comfortable to use. CyberPower endows the Fangbook III with a 15.6-inch anti-glare 1080p LED screen.

An Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 memory handles graphics processing. That’s disappointing, considering that Nvidia launched its 900M-series GPUs recently. 8GB of RAM is offered as a standard, and you can always choose to expand that to 16GB.

Storage-wise, you have a hefty 1TB hard drive at your disposal. You can swap that out for an SSD as large as 1TB, if you want. On the software side of things, Windows 8.1 runs the show. Ports and connectivity options include three USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0.

The “aggressive” design combines snazzy red accents, with black all over the place. The keyboard is back-lit as well. It’s up for pre-order on the manufacturer’s website, starting at $1,095.

Clearly, the OEM didn’t get the memo about overdone product names, and skipped our article recapping the 10 most ill-advised monikers in PC history. CyberPower actually has an entry in that list as well.

Anyway, $1,095 isn’t too expensive, at least compared to some of the competition from Alienware, or Razer. The HX6-100 is currently estimated to ship November 7.

Trying to buy a GPU in 2023 almost makes me miss the shortage
Two AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards on a pink surface.

The days of the GPU shortage are long over, but somehow, buying a GPU is harder than ever -- and that sentiment has very little to do with stock levels. It's just that there are no obvious candidates when shopping anymore.

In a generation where no single GPU stands out as the single best graphics card, it's hard to jump on board with the latest from AMD and Nvidia. I don't want to see another GPU shortage, but the state of the graphics card market is far from where it should be.
This generation is all over the place

This tiny ThinkPad can’t quite keep up with the MacBook Air M2
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 3 rear view showing lid and logo.

While the laptop industry continues to move toward 14-inch laptops and larger, the 13-inch laptop remains an important category. One of the best is the Apple MacBook Air M2, with an extremely thin and well-built chassis, great performance, and incredibly long battery life.

Lenovo has recently introduced the third generation of its ThinkPad X1 Nano, one of the lightest laptops we've tested and a good performer as well. It's stiff competition, but which of these two diminutive laptops stands apart?
