Dell drops Adamo 13 to $899

The principle end-of-year holiday buying season might be behind us, but computer maker Dell is still rolling out deals, today introducing a new low-cost configuration of its Adamo ultraportable notebook with prices starting at just $899. Although Dell’s super-slim Adamo line has been out for the better part of two years—it competed with Apple’s original MacBook Air—the new configuration could be worth serious consideration for folks looking for most of the portability of netbook but with considerably better performance. The new price point is particularly appealing when one considers the Adamos originally debuted with $2,000 price tags…but the downside is that the Adamo line is the better part of two years old and the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is just around the corner in January.

The Adamo 13 features a 13.4-inch 1,378 by 768-pixel display, up to a 128 GB SSD drive, 4 GB of DDR3 memory, and an Intel Core 2 Duo SL9600 processor running at 2.1 GHz. The system ships with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and runs off Intel GS45 GMA graphics: the system isn’t going to be a gaming powerhouse, but it should be able to handle high-definition video content on its own display. The system also sports 802.11a/g/n Wi-Fi, optional mobile broadband from AT&T, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and a webcam (Dell’s specs conflict between 1.3 and 2.0 megapixels). And true to its Adamo heritage, the system measures just 0.65 inches thick, with a depth of 9.5 inches and a width of 13.03 inches. Dell says the systems should be able to get more than 5 hours of battery life on a full charge.
