Dell introduces slim XPS 15z notebook

Computer maker Dell may have discontinued its line of Adamo notebooks, but that doesn’t mean the company has given up on producing super-slim computers that pack a punch. Today the company officially unveiled the Dell XPS 15z, packing second-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processors and Nvidia discrete graphics and an optional 1080p display in a package that measures less than one inch thick. They’re not as thin as the Adamos, but they pack a lot more power—and Dell says it’s just the first in a series of stylish new XPS and Inspiron notebooks heading to consumers.

“The XPS 15z provides a glimpse into a series of visually stunning and powerful systems coming soon to our consumer and small-to-medium-business product portfolio,” said Dell’s Consumer and Small/Medium Business group president Steve Felice, in a statement. “We’re committed to introducing next-generation products that help people pursue their personal and professional passions.”

The Dell XPS 15z is powered by either a second-generation “Sandy Bridge” Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor and features a 15.6-inch WLED display available in either standard HD or optional Full HD (1,920 by 1,080-pixel resolution). The displays are driven by Nvidia GeForce GT252M discrete graphics with either 1 or 2 GB of dedicated video memory—and the systems support both Nvidia 3DTV Play and Nvidia Optimus technology for switching between dedicated and discrete graphics to save power when serious graphics processing isn’t needed. (There’s also an HDMI 1.4 output for connecting to a big screen.) The XPX 15z support up to 750 GB of hard disk storage, ship with 4 GB of RAM (supporting up to 8 GB), and feature a slot-loading DVD±RW drive. Of course, the system sport 802.11a/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 wireless networking, along with two USB 3.0 ports, a dual USB/eSATA port, a 9-in-1 media card reader, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, Mini-DisplayPort video output, and gigabit Ethernet. Dell says the XPX 15z can get up to 8 hours of usage with its standard 8-cell battery. And the Dell XPS 15z ships in a case that’s less than one inch thick—0.97 inches.

Dell is the brand I tend to recommend to friends and family when they need a dependable laptop. Fortunately, the company often has some great laptop deals, and that’s the case today with $500 off the Dell XPS 14. Usually $1,500, it’s down to $1,000, so you’re saving a considerable chunk of change here. It’s the latest model with the style that we describe as a “momentous design,” so you’ll be delighted with how it looks. Here’s everything else you need to know about it.

Why you should buy the Dell XPS 14
We reviewed a similar model of the Dell XPS 14 earlier this year and we were fairly impressed, giving it 3.5 stars out of 5. Crucially, the particular model we looked at felt expensive for what it offered -- something you won’t have to worry about here. The only pivotal issues that align here are that the touch buttons lack haptic feedback, there are limited ports, and the RAM isn’t upgradeable. Buy a USB mouse and don’t plan on upgrading and you’re all good.

Packed with great hardware, here’s what it has to offer so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Why you should buy the Dell XPS 16
We called the Dell XPS 16 a “problematic powerhouse” in our review, which sounds worrying, but much of that comes down to its usually expensive price tag. While on sale, it’s a much more attractive proposition with its ultramodern aesthetic, good keyboard and haptic touchpad -- and of course its strong performance.
