Dell To Give 25 Pct. Power Cuts By 2010

It’s a big goal, but computer maker Dell is convinced it can lower power consumption in its desktops and laptops by 25% in the next two years – and has even stated its aim publicly.

The company has been making green claims, and, if successful, this will certainly add to them. It plans to accomplish the power reduction through a combination of more efficient fans, an improvement in power management systems and circuit design. It also plans to work with outside suppliers to cut their power use.

Albert Esser, vice president of power and infrastructure solutions at Dell’s Product Group, said:

"Our customers are inspiring us to address the environmental challenges facing our planet. We have listened to them and are designing next-generation technologies that dramatically reduce energy consumption, drive meaningful cost savings and help achieve a low-carbon economy. It is the right thing for our business, our customers and our shared environment."

Dell was the first computer manufacturer to join Climate Group, a government and industry collective pledged to fight global warming.
