Fortnite to support RTX ray tracing on Nvidia graphics cards

Nvidia has teamed up with Epic Games to bring its RTX technology to Fortnite, adding its ray tracing to the world’s most popular competitive game. That means real-time ray-traced reflections, ray-traced shadows, ambient occlusion, and support for the second-generation of Nvidia’s deep learning super sampling (DLSS) technology.

That should make the game look better than ever before, but also open up the option of improved performance, and even the potential for new competitive tricks made possible through tracking the shadows and other effects created by the actions of your opponents.

While ray tracing took some time to build up steam after its original debut on Nvidia’s RTX 2000-series Turing graphics cards, it’s now supported by a wider array of games than ever before. It’s also been shown to make a dramatic impact on the visuals of even low-tech games like Minecraft, leading to near life-like visuals.

AMD may finally have an answer to Nvidia’s dominance
RX 7900 XTX installed in a test bench.

Although AMD makes some of the best graphics cards, there's one thing it has always struggled with when compared to Nvidia: ray tracing. Even though RDNA 3 brought some improvements in that regard, Nvidia remains the king of ray tracing. However, a new leak about the upcoming RDNA 4 generation tells us that things might be about to change -- and the PlayStation 5 Pro might already benefit.

The scoop comes from Kepler_L2 on X (formerly Twitter), who shared a list of ray tracing features that are being added with RDNA 4. The leaker also claims that most of these should be available in the PS5 Pro, which won't run on RDNA 4 entirely, but is said to utilize parts of it to supplement the RDNA 3.5 chip that it'll house.

This GPU just beat the RTX 4090 — and Nvidia didn’t make it
The board of the RTX 4090 Super graphics card.

Modders are doing what Nvidia won't. The team at Teclab put together a Frankenstein graphics card, which it calls the RTX 4090 Super, that was able to beat the RTX 4090 by 13% in benchmarks.

You can't buy this graphics card, of course, but it's an interesting look into how splicing together the best components can deliver big performance gains. The heart of the RTX 4090 Super is the RTX 4090 GPU, which is Nvidia's AD102 die. Teclab changed everything else about the graphics card, though.

5 cheap graphics cards you should buy instead of the RTX 4060
Two RTX 4060 graphics cards sitting next to each other.

If you're in the market for a budget GPU, the RTX 4060 is one of the best graphics cards you can buy. It's available for a reasonable price, offers solid 1080p performance, and comes with a suite of Nvidia-exclusive features. Still, it's not the right graphics card for everyone.

As you can read in our RTX 4060 review, Nvidia's value-focused GPU has a few minor issues.  It's still a card to keep in mind if you're shopping for a budget graphics card, but we rounded up five alternatives that fill in the gaps that the RTX 4060 leaves.
