Gateway Recalls 14,000 Laptop Batteries

You would think they would have this lithium-ion technology figured out by now. After Sony’s multi-million dollar snafu with exploding laptop batteries last year, consumers are on edge about the packs that power their technology, and the latest news won’t make the situation any better. Gateway issued a new recall for 14,000 laptop batteries on Tuesday, citing concerns with overheating and potential fire damage.

The company has received four complaints about such battery malfunctions leading up to the recall, including some that caused minor property damage. The problematic packs were originally sold between May and August 2003 with Gateway 400VTX and 450ROG notebooks. Consumers can identify them by the serial numbers 6500760 or 6500761, along with a “Made by SMP” sticker.

Because Gateway sells directly to consumers and has their contact information on file, the company plans to get in touch with customers who may have the batteries and give them information on how to have them replaced. The faulty batteries were manufactured by Samsung and Simplo Technology Co. A Gateway spokesperson told Computerworld that they expect the companies to help cover the cost of replacing the errant batteries.

This 14-inch HP laptop is on sale for $179, and selling fast
HP Stream 13

Many people don't need to pick up the best laptop with the best GPU or CPU or a big screen, but instead, just need something basic to get online and do a bit of work or access their entertainment content. That's where the HP Stream comes in; it's a small, budget laptop without much power under the hood but perfect for the basics. There's even a great discount from Walmart that brings it down to $179 from $209, making it all that more affordable.

Why you should buy the HP Stream
The first thing you'll notice about the HP Stream is the 14-inch screen, which runs at a 1366 x 768 resolution, which isn't very high, but at least with a 14-inch screen, the pixel density is higher, so it's not too bad. Similarly, the 220nits of peak brightness won't let you watch anything in sunlight, but it's good enough for indoor use anytime. Luckily, it's also relatively lightweight at 3.2 pounds, and combined with the smaller size, it's easy to carry around with you, making this a great portable entertainment device. As for the battery life, you'll get about 8 hours out of it, which is impressive for a budget laptop of this size.

Flash sale drops the price of this Dell laptop from over $1,000 to $499
dell business laptops flash sale march 2023 vostro 16 on desk

If you're looking for a great business laptop, the Vostr 3420 has a lot of great specs for you to work with, and, even better, it has a pretty great price tag. The latter is thanks to Dell's flash sale that drops the price from $1,054 all the way down to $499, making this an absolute steal of a business laptop.

Why you should buy the Dell Vostro 3420
What makes the Vostro 3420 a great business laptop, besides the budget pricing, is the 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U under the hood. While it may be a mid-tier CPU, it's more than enough for almost all business needs, whether running Zoom meetings, handling Excell, or word processing. You also get 8GB of RAM, which is slightly on the lower end, especially since the Vostro 3240 comes with Windows 11 Pro, which tends to consume a couple of GBs of RAM. Even so, it should be more than enough, and with some minor app and tab management, it's excellent for work and day-to-day use. One thing we feel could have been bigger is the 256GB of storage you get, but it's not a dealbreaker, and you can always go for one of these external hard drive deals to help supplement the internal storage.
