Honor charms with the first MagicBook laptops sold globally

Huawei has sold MateBook X laptops globally for years. Now, for 2020, Huawei-owned brand Honor is attempting to break out of China and into the hands of owners worldwide. The Honor MagicBook 14 and MagicBook 15 are the first to be sold internationally, and like the brand’s phones, are aimed at young people on a budget.

The Honor laptops look identical apart from size and weight. A choice of mystic silver and space grey are provided, while the edge of the display lid, and the Honor logo, have a laser-etched blue tint that’s subtle yet classy.

The aluminum chassis is upmarket, and the thin bezels around the screen ensure the MagicBook looks modern and expensive. The MagicBook laptops feel solid, the keyboard has just the right amount of travel, and both laptops are light enough to feel portable.

Each laptop is powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor with Radeon Vega 8 integrated graphics. That comes with 8GB of RAM and the option of either a 256GB or 512GB SSD. Port selection includes USB Type-C, a pair of USB Type-A, HDMI, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Like Huawei’s MateBook laptops, each MagicBook has a fingerprint sensor in the power button and a pop-up webcam set between the F6 and F7 keys. Windows 10 is the default OS, of course.

It’s screen size that separates the two. The 14-inch MagicBook has a Full HD, 16:9 screen with a 84% screen-to-body ratio. Its set inside a 15.9mm thick chassis that weighs 1.38kg. The 15-inch model is a little beefier at 1.53kg and 16.9mm thick, but the 15.6-inch screen has a higher 87% screen-to-body ratio. The aspect ratio and resolution remain the same.

The battery in each is charged with an included 65W brick, providing about 10 hours use on a single charge.

Price and availability

Honor hasn’t confirmed price or availability yet. These details will follow its February 24 launch event.

Expect the Honor MagicBook laptops to be sold through Honor’s own online store, and potentially through other retailers, with prices somewhere around the $500 to $600 mark, based on the cost of the laptops in China. We’ll update here when we have final details.

Samsung has announced the finalized launch details for the Galaxy Book Flex2 5G 2-in-1 Windows laptop. It comes complete with Intel Evo certification, which means alongside the 11th-generation Intel Core processor, it has Iris XE integrated graphics, instant wake, and improved battery efficiency. You may have seen a laptop similar to it already, and that's because Samsung previously announced the laptop simply as the Galaxy Book Flex 5G, but didn't talk about release or pricing at the time. The confusing name change comes with the Galaxy Book Flex2 5G’s release in the U.K.

It’s an important model for Samsung, as it's the company's first 5G laptop, giving you the chance to connect to the fastest mobile signal possible, provided you’re in an area with coverage, and have the relevant plan from your carrier. However, it’ll be a Sub-6 5G connection only, and will not connect to an mmWave signal. The laptop has a Thunderbolt 4 port, a USB Type-C port, and a USB 3.0 port, plus there’s also Wi-Fi 6 onboard, Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth 5.1, rounding out the impressive array of connectivity options.

Honor has announced the global availability of its Honor Band 6 fitness tracker and the Honor MagicBook Pro Windows laptop. Both devices have already launched in China, but the company has used CES 2021 as a platform to confirm the wider launch. While Honor is best known for its smartphones, the company’s smartwatches, other wearables, and laptops have become increasingly important to it, due to the U.S. government’s restrictions on Huawei.
Honor Band 6
The Honor Band 6 is the latest in a long line of simple, but highly effective fitness bands from Honor. This time the design has changed considerably compared to the Honor Band 5, and shares more with the recently released Honor Band ES. It has a 1.47-inch AMOLED touchscreen attached to a silicone band with a proper clasp, rather than a simple pin-and-eye system seen on most low-cost fitness bands.

It comes with 10 workout tracking modes, including running, cycling, rowing, and swimming. The Honor Band 6 is water-resistant to 50 meters, and can be used in the pool, when it will return data including SWOLF and stroke rates. Additionally, the heart rate sensor on the back of the band works when swimming too. Beyond activity tracking, the band will monitor sleep if worn overnight, keep track of stress levels, and menstrual cycles too. It has a blood oxygen monitor, which is most helpful for sleep tracking purposes.
