HP beats expectations and surpasses Lenovo, shipping 7 million notebooks in Q1 2014

HP may outpace Lenovo’s notebook PC shipping numbers by the end of the year, based on updated projections for the manufacturers’ respective first quarter results. According to DigiTimes‘ supply chain sources, HP has reportedly shipped approximately seven million laptops — one million higher than expected — in the first three months of 2014. Lenovo, the highest-shipping OEM in 2013, has reportedly shipped 6.6 million notebooks during the same period. If both companies continue at the same pace all the way through 2014, HP could end the year as the highest shipping laptop manufacturer.

Despite the higher-than-expected numbers, HP’s seven million units represents a nine percent drop from Q4 2013. On top of that, HP’s improved short term fortunes aside, market research analyst Gartner predicts that the “traditional” PC market will continue to shrink overall, with total shipments falling from 296.1 million units last year, to 276.7 million units this year.

The supply chain source says they believe HP may be able to ship more than the estimated 28 million notebooks that HP was initially expected to move. Meanwhile, projections predict that Lenovo ship 28.3 million notebooks by the end of 2014.

Either way, both Lenovo and HP seem to be in better shape than Acer, which has reportedly suffered a 15 percent sequential drop during the first quarter of 2014.

14-inch Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14
-- $180, was $230

The Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14 81VS0001US is the cheapest laptop on this list. Right now, this 14-incher is available on Best Buy for just $180, $50 less than its normal retail price of $230. This laptop is ideal only for the most basic home and office tasks since it comes with a generally weak processor – the AMD A6-9220e. It's fine for light computing duties like web browsing, MS Office apps, music and movie playback, and similar uses. If you need a machine for video editing, Photoshop, or other CPU-intensive programs, though, look elsewhere. The Lenovo IdeaPad 1 14 includes the AMD Radeon R4 for integrated graphics, which is a pretty weak graphics processor that can handle only the lightest computer games. At least it comes with a free 1-year Microsoft Office 365 Personal subscription.

Trying to buy a GPU in 2023 almost makes me miss the shortage
Two AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards on a pink surface.

The days of the GPU shortage are long over, but somehow, buying a GPU is harder than ever -- and that sentiment has very little to do with stock levels. It's just that there are no obvious candidates when shopping anymore.

In a generation where no single GPU stands out as the single best graphics card, it's hard to jump on board with the latest from AMD and Nvidia. I don't want to see another GPU shortage, but the state of the graphics card market is far from where it should be.
This generation is all over the place
