Huawei calls the texture of its new laptop ‘skin-soothing’

A new version of Huawei’s MateBook X Pro was launched recently, a bit of surprise since a MateBook X Pro was announced in February at the 2022 Mobile World Congress (MWC) technology event.

In addition to the leap from 11th-gen Intel processors for the latest Alder Lake P-series chips, which have significantly faster multicore performance, Huawei also curiously calls its new texture “skin-soothing.” We’re not sure quite what that means, but in a promotional video, Huawei calls it a “cutting-edge skin-soft feel.”

The 2022 Huawei MateBook X Pro comes in three colors, including a beautiful Ink Blue.

The newest Huawei MateBook X Pro is also available with a magnesium alloy body, an upgrade over the standard aluminum version. There are two new color options for this premium finish. White is a classic alternative to the standard gray of the aluminum model and the Ink Blue version is an interesting slate shade with a blue tint that’s quite attractive.

With 16GB of memory and up to one TB of SSD storage this should be a very capable laptop for most office work and would be very responsive for casual needs. This isn’t the best pick for a heavy workload and isn’t a gaming laptop with its Intel Iris Xe graphics.

HUAWEI MateBook X Pro - Smarter Than You Can Imagine

With a 14.2-inch, 500-nit touchscreen that refreshes at 90Hz, it’s big enough and bright enough to handle spreadsheets, photos, and videos nicely. The display should be nice and crisp with its 3K resolution. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports and 2 USB-C ports, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2 provide plenty of connectivity options, making the newest 2022 Huawei MateBook X Pro a solid choice for a thin and light laptop.

It isn’t known whether this intriguing laptop will land in the United States. NotebookCheck estimated U.S. prices based upon the given Chinese prices as starting at approximately $1,330 for the Intel Core i5-1240P model with aluminum body and $1,922 for the highest configuration with the magnesium body and Intel Core i7-1260P processor.

Acer Swift X 16 hands-on review: A tantalizing preview
An Acer Swift X 16 sits open on a coffee table.

I received a preproduction Acer Swift X 16 to look at, and it's driving me crazy. Why, you ask? Because Acer put a lid on benchmarking, meaning I can't run the Intel 12th-gen Core i7-1260P CPU and the Intel Arc graphics through our usual tests. I'm dying to see how they perform, and they're right there in front of me and yet entirely out of reach. That's OK, though. I can still give some impressions of the laptop's design in anticipation of its release in June 2022.

As a preproduction machine, all specifications are subject to change. I received a configuration with the Core i7, Intel Arc graphics, and a WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600) 16:10 IPS display that should cost $1,250 when released (with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage). That's a fair price for a beefy 16-inch laptop, and there's plenty to talk about even if I can't dig in the way I'd like.

Smuggler caught with 160 Intel CPUs strapped to his body
An Intel Alder Lake Core i5-12600K CPU and its packaging.

A Chinese national was recently caught entering China with 160 Intel processors strapped to his body, an act that customs officials amount to smuggling. The China Customs office stated that it had found Intel's 11th Gen and the latest 12th Gen Alder Lake models strapped to the man's abdomen, waist, and legs.

Since none of the items were declared, the smuggling could be part of a tax-evasion scheme to avoid import tariffs on computer components.

Wedge-shaped MateBook X Pro headlines Huawei’s MWC lineup
Huawei MateBook X Pro 2022

Mobile World Congress, the annual trade show for the mobile industry taking place in Spain this week, is usually associated with smartphones, but Huawei has often used the show to reveal its computing products, and 2022 is no different. Huawei has revealed three new devices — the MateBook X Pro 2022, the MateBook E 2022, and the MateStation X, plus a new software feature called Super Device. Let’s take a look at all of them.
MateBook X Pro 2022
Made from metal, the MateBook X Pro 2022 is a laptop with a 14.2-inch screen set in a case with a minimal 6mm-thick bezel for a 92.5% screen-to-body ratio. Closed, the case has a wedge shape, meaning it measures 15.5mm at its thickest point and only 5.4mm at its thinnest point. It weighs 1.38 kilograms, which is about the same as a 13-inch Apple MacBook M1.

Unlike old MateBook laptops, Huawei has moved the video call camera out of a function key and into the screen’s bezel, which means people will no longer have to stare up your nose during a call. The touchpad has been given gesture support, so you can adjust the brightness and volume with a swipe at the edge, and use a double tap with your knuckle to take a screen shot. This “knock” feature was previously seen on Huawei’s smartphones, and is surprisingly helpful. The case has six speakers for surround sound, four USB ports, and a 90-watt Super Charger fast charging system.
