Intel Debuts Three New Technologies

Intel Debuts Three New TechnologiesIntel is making news once again. At the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Franciscoit’s debuted a trio of new technologies, including the low-end Silverthorne mobile processor and a method that will double the capacity of phase-change products.   But the item that willgrab the headlines has been dubbed Tukwila. It’s a quad core chip that packs a remarkable two billion transistors into a tiny space, according to the BBC.   It’s 12 years since Intelintroduced a chip with a billion transistors, making this an evolution. But don’t imagine it’s a revolution, by any means.   Its power is actually quite modest, with a processingspeed of just 2Ghz, something you can already find on many PCs (in case you’re wondering, IBM claims the fastest commercial chip at 4.7Ghz).   The transistors are used for memory, whichcan be processed faster by its proximity to the chip. But it’s not the greenest product around, with high power consumption.   "That’s very much a reflection of the market placedemands," said Justin Ratner, Intel’s CTO. "These chips go into a quite a unique market place."

I tried the trendy new Arc browser — and this one feature blew my mind
The Arc web browser running on macOS Ventura, showing the tab sidebar on the left.

I'm a tab hoarder. I'm the type that tends to have literally hundreds of tabs open at any one time (I know, it’s a problem). That makes me the last person who you’d think would enjoy a browser like Arc.

The innovative new browser stashes tabs in a sidebar and automatically archives them if they haven't been used in 24 hours. That might sound handy to you, but the thought of all my precious tabs disappearing into the archive fills me with worryingly intense anxiety.

Yet another disappointment about Intel’s next chips may be true

Intel’s successor for its existing 13th-gen Raptor Lake desktop processors is expected to launch later this year, and as far as the rumors go, it's not going to be a particularly exciting release.

It's already reportedly going to be a fairly minor upgrade -- but now, counter to previous reports, a new piece of information suggests that Intel will continue using the same quad-core configuration for its Core i3 SKUs under the 14th-gen Raptor Lake Refresh series.
