Microsoft has issued a security advisory about older versions of Excel that are being targeted by hackers. The hackers are using a zero-day exploit that couldcompromise data, according to TechNewsWorld. What versions are at risk? Microsoft says it’s there in Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Service Pack 2, along with Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2003, Microsoft Office Excel 2002, Microsoft OfficeExcel 2000 and Microsoft Excel 2004 for Mac, and a successful exploit could mean remote code execution. Microsoft has been monitoring the situation, and said on the Security Response Centerblog, While the attack appears to be targeted, and not widespread, we are monitoring the issue and are working with our MSRA (Microsoft Security Response Alliance) partners to help protectcustomers. We will update the advisory and this blog as new information becomes available." To have the vulnerability exploited, a user would need to open a malware e-mail attachment orvisit a website that contains a file designed to exploit the vulnerability. The exploit gives the hacker the same rights as the local user.
