Mozilla Issues Firefox Updates

Mozilla has issued updates, all rated as “critical” for both the Firefox 2 and 3 browsers.

Firefox 3 receives three patches, the first for Mac OSX, to stop a potential attack by a malformed .gif file. The second fixes a flaw in the uniform resource identifier (URI) that could let external apps access the computer. The final Firefox fix addresses the way the browser handles CSS code. Without the fix, it’s possible for a crafted CSS object to crash the application then allow remote code execution.

Two pair of updates for Firefox 2 address the URI and CSS issues.

With support for Firefox 2 ending later this year, Mozilla has recommended users upgrade to Firefox 3. The updates are available from Mozilla, US-CERT, and Sans.

YouTube’s dislike button is barely functional, says Mozilla
Person Holding Tablet Computer Showing Videos

YouTube's dislike button does nothing for the algorithm, a new Mozilla study has found. We continue to see content we don't want no matter how much we mash that thumbs down. The same goes for "Not Interested" and "Don't recommend this channel" options.

The report, titled Does This Button Work? Investigating YouTube's Ineffective User Controls, comes after a months-long study of YouTube behavior by the Mozilla Foundation. They enlisted the help of 20,000 volunteer web users through an extension on Mozilla's Firefox browser, the RegretsReporter.

The Camo app showing its latest 1.8 update

Reincubate Camo has come out swinging against Apple's Continuity Camera technology with a slew of new controls you won't find anywhere else. These include variable frame rates, intelligent zoom technology, and video stabilization improvements. Many of these go well beyond anything Apple offers in MacOS Ventura.

You may have heard of the Camo app. It allows you to use your iPhone as a Mac webcam and has been a popular piece of software since its release in 2020. Apple may have borrowed a few of Camo's key concepts when it displayed the Continuity Camera at WWDC 22 in June. Undeterred, Reincubate, the company that owns Camo, wants to differentiate itself from Apple's more basic tech. Update 1.8 gives you what Apple does not.

The MacBook Air on a table in front of a window.

This is the eighth zero-day this year, putting Apple on track to beat last year's unfortunate record of 12 zero-day flaws.
