Rumors suggest imminent release of 21.5-inch iMac with 4K display

With much of the hype over Apple’s latest round of iOS devices finally coming to a lull, the company is starting to prepare some new Mac launches, 9to5Mac reports. The first of which is, apparently, a new 21.5-inch iMac with a 4K resolution display.

The reports, which 9to5Mac says derive from “multiple reliable sources,” suggest you might start seeing these computers on the shelf of your local Apple Store as early as next Tuesday, Oct. 13. Larger shipments will begin to initiate from there. Because of this, don’t expect the 4K iMac to be commonplace until at least early November.

On the outside, save for their ultra-high definition displays, the 4K iMacs don’t appear to differ too drastically from their 1080p counterparts. However, internally, the graphics cards will be “much faster” and OS X El Capitan will come preinstalled. Like the 27-inch 5K iMac before it, the 4K iMac is expected to cost a little more than its lesser twin.

Of course, as we reported back in August, Apple also filed with the FCC for a new Magic Mouse and Bluetooth keyboard, allegedly sporting Force Touch capabilities and improved battery life, respectively. While it’s not clear yet if those accessories will launch alongside the new iMac, now’s undoubtedly a better time than ever.

This redesigned iMac concept is a throwback to the iMac G4 — and I love it
apple imac redesign g4 throwback xhakomo doda 2

Nostalgia is a funny thing. I miss '80s music with the passion of a die-hard fan, even though I was never around to experience it. I also miss things I know I hated at the time they were happening. Along those lines, now that the iMac’s old design is rumored to finally be getting a revamp, artists are exploring a more retro approach to a 2020 iMac -- and the nostalgia is real.

One of my favorites so far is this iMac mock-up by London-based designer Xhakomo Doda that takes its inspiration from the iMac G4. It brings the design right up to date, complete with razor-thin bezels and a Space Gray metal construction. Somehow, it made me miss the quirky, oddball design of the iMac G4 from 2002, even though I never owned one.

Trying to buy a GPU in 2023 almost makes me miss the shortage
Two AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards on a pink surface.

The days of the GPU shortage are long over, but somehow, buying a GPU is harder than ever -- and that sentiment has very little to do with stock levels. It's just that there are no obvious candidates when shopping anymore.

In a generation where no single GPU stands out as the single best graphics card, it's hard to jump on board with the latest from AMD and Nvidia. I don't want to see another GPU shortage, but the state of the graphics card market is far from where it should be.
This generation is all over the place
