New Back to School Computers From Gateway

Even though most high schoolers are probably too busy enjoying summer break to think about back to school, Gateway today announced their new fall computer line up geared for the school crowd. Features of some of the new desktop PCs include Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, Intel 64-bit dual core processors and BTX chassis.

Gateway 840GM: At the heart of this high end computer is an Intel Pentium D 830 dual core processor with 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM and an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which offers a 2x increase in 3D performance over Intel’s previous graphics technology. It is outfitted with a TV tuner, remote control and features all of the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 bells and whistles. Other hardware built-ins include a 16x double-layer multi-format DVD+/-RW optical drive, DVD-ROM, 250GB SATA hard drive (7200RPM with 8MB cache), three IEEE 1394 ports, and seven USB 2.0 ports. It will retail for $1049.99.

Gateway 835GM: A step down from the 840GM, this model will retail for $849.99 and features the D 820 Intel dual core processor. It has a 250GB hard drive, double layer 16X DVD+/-RW multi-format drive and DVD-ROM for storage. Graphics are handled by an Intel GMA 950. The 835GM has the same number of ports as its more powerful sibling.

Gateway 831GM: At the $699.99 price point is the 831GM. Highlights on this model include an Intel(R) Pentium 4 processor 630 (3.0GHz) with Hyper-Threading technology, 512MB DDR2, 250GB SATA hard drive, Intel GMA 900 graphics processor and 10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN.

All of the PCs are bundled with an array of Microsoft productivity applications, CD/DVD burning software from Nero and an 8-1 digital media reader.

If you want a thin and light productivity laptop without paying much, you can't go wrong with the HP Pavilion x360 Convertible, especially since it's also a convertible. Luckily, HP has a great deal running right now that discounts the X360 to $ 500 from $800, so it's well worth checking out if you're interested.

Why you should buy the HP Pavilion x360 Convertible
while The Pavilion x360 Convertible doesn't quite make our list of best laptops, it comes with an Intel Core i5-1235U, a mid-range CPU that will likely be more than enough for most consumers who need to get work or schoolwork done. While it won't be able to handle more complex things like video editing, the Intel Iris XE graphics means you can do some basic graphical editing if needed. You can also upgrade to an Intel Core i7-1255U for $150, but it's likely not worth it if you want a basic laptop for work or school. What we would upgrade is the 8GB of DDR4 RAM, either to the 12GB option for $40 or the 16GB for $80, probably the latter since it will provide you with the best quality of life upgrade, but the 12GB would still be good if you don't want to pay the extra $80.

Lenovo tends to offer plenty of laptop deals but we're particularly impressed with the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 Intel that's on sale right now. It's currently on sale for $609. According to Lenovo, that means a sizeable price drop of $1,710. We'll take that with a pinch of salt, however, as Lenovo uses an estimated value system which means its original prices can be higher than the reality. Whatever the original price though, $609 is a great price for this system. Here's what you need to know.

Eyeing the increasing threat of damaging cyberattacks by hackers backed by hostile foreign states, the U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) on Tuesday announced the creation of the National Security Cyber Section -- aka NatSec Cyber -- within its National Security Division (NSD).

Hackers operating out of countries like China, Russia, and North Korea seek to cause disruption across a wide range of sectors, steal government and trade secrets, spy on targets, and raise revenue via extortion. Such nefarious activities have long been a concern for those overseeing U.S. national security, and the DOJ’s new unit aims to improve the efficiency of tackling the perpetrators’ operations.
