A new definition of ‘open source’ could spell trouble for Big AI

The Open Source Initiative (OSI), self-proclaimed steward of the open source definition, the most widely used standard for open-source software, announced an update to what constitutes an “open source AI” on Thursday. The new wording could now exclude models from industry heavyweights like Meta and Google.

“Open Source has demonstrated that massive benefits accrue to everyone after removing the barriers to learning, using, sharing, and improving software systems,” the OSI wrote in a recent blog post. “For AI, society needs the same essential freedoms of Open Source to enable AI developers, deployers, and end users to enjoy those same benefits.”

An Open Source AI is an AI system made available under terms and in a way that grant the freedoms[1] to:

  • Use the system for any purpose and without having to ask for permission.
  • Study how the system works and inspect its components.
  • Modify the system for any purpose, including to change its output.
  • Share the system for others to use with or without modifications, for any purpose

These freedoms apply both to a fully functional system and to discrete elements of a system. A precondition to exercising these freedoms is to have access to the preferred form to make modifications to the system.

Under such a definition, neither Meta’s Llama 3.1, nor Google’s Gemma model would count as open source AIs, Nik Marda, Mozilla’s technical lead of AI governance, told PCMag. “The lack of a precise definition in the past has made it easier for some companies to act like their AI was open source even when it wasn’t. Many – if not, most – of the models from the large commercial actors will not meet this definition.”

The older, looser definition allowed companies enough leeway to potentially undermine their consumer AI products, changing the models functionality and disabling access on the company’s whim, Marda argued. Such actions could potentially lead to “disrupted services, subpar performance, and more expensive features in the apps and tools that everyone uses.”

Neither Meta nor Google have yet acknowledged the new definition as a standard of the industry.

OpenAI, the brains behind the popular ChatGPT generative AI solution, released a report saying it blocked more than 20 operations and dishonest networks worldwide in 2024 so far. The operations differed in objective, scale, and focus, and were used to create malware and write fake media accounts, fake bios, and website articles.

OpenAI confirms it has analyzed the activities it has stopped and provided key insights from its analysis. "Threat actors continue to evolve and experiment with our models, but we have not seen evidence of this leading to meaningful breakthroughs in their ability to create substantially new malware or build viral audiences," the report says.

Zoom debuts its new customizable AI Companion 2.0

Zoom unveiled its AI Companion 2.0 during the company's Zoomtopia 2024 event on Wednesday. The AI assistant is incorporated throughout the Zoom Workplace app suite and is promised to "deliver an AI-first work platform for human connection."

While Zoom got its start as a videoconferencing app, the company has expanded its product ecosystem to become an "open collaboration platform" that includes a variety of communication, productivity, and business services, both online and in physical office spaces. The company's AI Companion, which debuted last September, is incorporated deeply throughout Zoom Workplace and, like Google's Gemini or Microsoft's Copilot, is designed to automate repetitive tasks like transcribing notes and summarizing reports that can take up as much as 62% of a person's workday.
