The latest Windows 11 build makes notifications more useful and less annoying

Despite the ability to test Windows 11 in the Windows Insider program, the operating system is still not final, which is why Microsoft just delivered the fourth major Windows 11 build. New in this latest release are some tweaks to the Notification Center, background activity app notifications, updates to the Microsoft Store, and even more rounded corners.

For most people, the biggest noticeable change sits in the Notification Center. Now, it is possible to quickly access Focus Assist settings directly from Notification Center, so you can quickly silence your app notifications.

Elsewhere, this release updates the hidden icons flyout in the lower right corner of the Taskbar. It now has more rounded corners — moving away from the leftover squared-off design from Windows 10.

Some other updates in this new Windows 11 build cover the background activity notification for an app in the Taskbar. It used to glow orange in Windows 10, but now, apps flash more subtly with a red pill and flashing that eventually fades away. Microsoft says this can help minimize distractions.

Windows Insider builds usually change a lot of other smaller things, so it’s no surprise to see three other changes. These are not as huge, but might be noticeable in daily use of the operating system.

With the latest Windows 11 build, the touch keyboard icon in the Taskbar has been adjusted so it’s no longer huge. The Taskbar calendar flyout also sees a change so it now fully collapses down when clicking the chevron at the top, allowing you to see more notifications. Finally, Microsoft says the new Microsoft Store should now feel a bit faster, with animations for selecting movies and apps.

Based on feedback from beta testing, this fourth Windows 11 release also brings a long list of fixes. The fixes squash bugs with the Windows Explorer process, Task View, Settings app, and more. There are also a set of known issues if you plan to download. You might see issues with entering text in search in the Start Menu, experience a flickering taskbar, and a host of other things. Previous Windows 11 builds have tweaked the Start Menu, the App preview icons in the Taskbar. Microsoft even introduced the chat experience for Teams earlier this week, allowing beta testers to keep in contact with friends and family through an in-built app.

Microsoft is finally making Copilot+ laptops useful for AI

Microsoft's Copilot+ PC initiative has been a smash hit, with many of them landing among the best laptops, but not for the AI hardware inside. Now, finally, Microsoft is putting the neural processing unit (NPU) inside Copilot+ PCs to good use. Starting today and going throughout the next two months, Microsoft will begin rolling out the 24H2 update for all Windows 11 PCs, and in the process, unlock several features for Copilot+ PCs, including the highly controversial Recall.

Recall is definitely the star of the show here, which will start showing up on Copilot+ laptops with a Snapdragon X chipset throughout October. Last week, Microsoft laid the groundwork for the release of Recall, detailing the security architecture of the feature and addressing some major criticisms of it. Now, for example, Recall is turned off instead of on by default. Microsoft is also allowing users to filter websites and giving users more control over their snapshots, including deleting them all.

Whatever you do, don’t install the Windows 11 September update

Microsoft has warned users in a post on its support blog that the September KB5043145 update, released on Thursday, is causing some Windows 11 PCs to restart multiple times, show the blue screen of death, or even freeze.

The problems in the recent update affect those on the 22H2 or 23H3 version of Windows 11. However, Microsoft said it is investigating the issue and will provide more information when it's available. Microsoft confirmed: "After installing this update, some customers have reported that their device restarts multiple times or becomes unresponsive with blue or green screens. According to the reports, some devices automatically open the Automatic Repair tool after repeated restart attempts. In some cases, BitLocker recovery can also be triggered."

Windows Latest has spotted a recent support document post from Microsoft confirming native Ahead of Time (AOT) support has been added to the Windows App SDK. According to Microsoft, this could bring major improvements to the launch times of Windows 11 apps. In its own testing, Microsoft has measured a 50% reduction in start times and around an 8x reduction in package size.

The Windows App SDK exists to help developers use classic desktop app frameworks to make apps with access to modern APIs that can be used across all kinds of Windows devices.
