Nvidia Introduces Low Cost GeForce 8

Now that Windows Vista has pushed DirectX 10 into the mainstream, Nvidia is looking to mop up customers with a line of DirectX 10-compliant graphics cards that will sell at a mainstream price point.

The GeForce 8500 GT, 8600 GT, and 8600 GTS will retail at prices ranging from $89 to $229. Although the new budget cards won’t pack the same punch as their gamer-geared brethren they will share many of the same features, including the Nvidia Lumenex engine, Nvidia Quantum Effects technology for simulation and rendering of visual effects, and the Nvidia PureVideo HD video processor. This last feature will allow Blu-ray movies to be viewed on a regular home computer.

"GPUs are no longer a luxury required only by hardcore gamers," said Jeff Fisher, senior vice president of the GPU business unit at Nvidia, in a press release. "These new GPUs extend the reach of our award-winning GeForce 8 Series and offer cutting- edge, next-generation features to everyone from the hardcore gamer to the casual PC user."

Cards based on the GeForce 8600 GTS are available immediately, while the 8500 GT and 8600 GT cards will be out on or before May 1.

Nvidia's beastly RTX 4090 has just managed to set a new record by running a game at 13K resolution. We don't just mean something along the lines of Tetris, either, but a modern and well-loved title -- Genshin Impact.

One brave RTX 4090 owner attempted to run the game at 13K. Despite the ultra-high resolution, the RTX 4090 made the game run at a surprisingly high frame rate, and there's video footage that proves it.

Nvidia's monstrous RTX 4090 is finally here, and it's powerful (just read our RTX 4090 review). It's so powerful, in fact, that there aren't a lot of games that truly showcase the GPU's power. The RTX 4090 is the best graphics card you can buy, but you'll want to install a few key games to show off what the GPU is capable of.

There are a few games that still push the RTX 4090, though many of our recommendations come on the back of Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). DLSS 3 includes a frame generation setting that's only available on RTX 40-series GPUs, which helps a lot of games that are traditionally limited by your processor hit a high frame rate.

How much will Nvidia’s RTX 4080 12GB unlaunch cost partners?

When Nvidia caved to customer outrage and decided to “unlaunch” its 4080 12GB card, its add-in board (AIB) partners were already frantically pushing on the behind-the-scene work that has to be done to get graphics cards prepped, packaged, and ready to sell to eager customers. Nvidia isn’t canceling the card, please note. It’s going to give it a new name, most likely something like the GeForce RTX 4070 or 4070 Ti.

Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as hitting the undo button for partners. As only the second Ada Lovelace GPU available, and arriving at a lower cost than the 4090, sales of the 4080 12GB would have been brisk even if hard-core gamers complained. That means packaging has already been printed, cut, and folded. The graphics cards’ BIOS has already been flashed and circuit boards have been branded using the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 12GB name.
