Why Nvidia could release an even more powerful RTX 3090 Ti but probably won’t

Nvidia is expected to reveal the RTX 3080 Ti and 3070 Ti soon. But a new leak suggests that an RTX 3090 Ti could be coming soon, too. The most recent version of Zotac’s FireStorm overclocking software includes references to an RTX 3090 Ti alongside the upcoming but unconfirmed RTX 3080 Ti and 3070 Ti.

You can download the software yourself and see the files. In the Resources folder of the installation, there are three files for the 3090 Ti: Led_E_3090Ti, Led_E_Fan90Ti, and Led_E_Fan90Ti_H. These aren’t just nebulous file names, either. The files are PNG images for the bottom bar of the Zotac software, where the GPU name is. Zotac has images for the RTX 3080 Ti and 3070 Ti, too.

The latest version includes image files for the GPU name.

Not that an RTX 3090 Ti would make much sense. The RTX 3090 already has most of the power of the GA102 core inside of it. A completely unlocked core would bring around 250 more CUDA cores (10,496 versus 10,752), more RT cores, and more Tensor cores. That’s not enough of a difference to justify an update, especially on a card that was never really targeting gamers. Unless Nvidia is cooking up a new GPU core, we probably won’t see the RTX 3090 Ti.

We could see a refresh to meet supply issues, however. Nvidia just announced its Lite Hash Rate GPUs, and the company clarified that it won’t be releasing an LHR RTX 3090. That’s because the RTX 3090 hasn’t had the same demand issues as the rest of the Ampere range. An updated model with the Ti branding but identical performance could get more cards into the market stream. After all, with GPU prices where they are right now, spending $1,500 for a card doesn’t look so bad.

Zotac is likely just covering its bases, though. The RTX 3090 offers peak performance out of the GA102 GPU as it is, and at $1,500 with a needlessly high amount of video memory for gaming, it’s not an ideal card for most people. A few image files means that Zotac doesn’t need to update its software if Nvidia decides to release an RTX 3090 Ti somewhere down the line.

It looks like no one is buying Nvidia’s RTX 4070
The RTX 4070 graphics card on a pink background.

Despite some positive reviews, including our own RTX 4070 review, Nvidia's latest graphics card is reportedly seeing poor sales. Only one week after launching, it's being beat by last-gen GPUs on bestseller charts, and reports suggest Nvidia could pause production to keep the price stable.

Wccftech reported that an update posted on the Chinese Board Channel forums says Nvidia could temporarily halt production in order to "maintain a stable price system." It's hard to say if Nvidia will actually pause production or not. Inventory and sales numbers are rarely shared, so it's important to handle a forum post like this with some skepticism.

Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti may be more affordable, but will it be a good value?
nvidia geforce rtx 4070 review 07

Nvidia's RTX 4070 only launched a few days ago, but rumor has it that Team Green already has another GPU coming out soon -- the RTX 4060 Ti.

Reportedly scheduled for a May release, the GPU might be much cheaper than the RTX 4070, but even that price cut might not be enough to make it competitive against some of the other top graphics cards.

Nvidia finally made a tiny RTX 4000 graphics card (but you probably don’t want it)
RTX 4000 SFF going into a PC case.

After months of massive graphics cards like the RTX 4090, Nvidia is finally slimming things down at its GPU Technology Conference (GTC). The RTX 4000 SFF delivers the Ada Lovelace architecture in a tiny package, but you probably won't find it sitting among the best graphics cards.

Although the RTX 4000 SFF uses the same architecture in gaming GPUs like the RTX 4080, it's built for a very different purpose. It uses Nvidia enterprise drivers, and it's made to power computer-aided design (CAD), graphics design, AI applications, and software development, according to Nvidia. The card takes up two slots and includes a low-profile bracket for cases like the Hyte Y40.
