Official PlayStation app for iPhone and Android coming soon

PlayStation product manager, Emmanuel Orssaud, announced the news on the Official PlayStation blog.

The app will be available to download for iPhone and iPod Touch with OS 4 and greater. It will also run on Android phones running OS 1.6 and greater. The first version (1.0) will be available in the following countries: UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands. No news on when this will be available for the United States.

The app is a free download and will include a variety of features in version 1.0 including:

a variety of social features that allow you to check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends’ games and online status.
enhanced discovery all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
announcements straight from the European PlayStation blog
viral features to share your favorite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

Future version will incorporate multiple languages and include the ability for players to add comments onto the PlayStation blog.

We’ll keep watching this story as it develops. Social gaming is a booming business and PlayStation has yet to compete in the mobile arena. Their foray into the market will likely be great news to legions of gaming fans looking to incorporate their console gaming on the PlayStation to their phones.

I'd forgive you for not knowing that January 28 is Data Privacy Day, but don't be surprised that Apple knew. The company hangs its hat on protecting its users' privacy, and is all too happy to point out the myriad ways apps, websites, and other companies can hold your data and track you. Following up on announcements made at the Worldwide Developers Conference last year, Apple's ready to make its next big step in user privacy: Turning off cross-app user tracking by default on the iPhone.

Starting with an upcoming iOS 14 release, Apple will block all apps from tracking users using a phone's unique IDFA, or Identifier for Advertisers, unless given explicit consent by the user. This has huge ramifications for the ways apps track users to target them for advertising and customization services, and it's happening in one fell swoop.

Sony is inviting one and all to hunt down bugs on its PlayStation platform for some potentially big cash payouts.

The entertainment giant has actually had a bug bounty program in place for some time, but operated it privately with select researchers. This week’s announcement means the program is now open to everyone, including “the security research community, gamers, and anyone else,” Geoff Norton, Sony’s senior director of software engineering, wrote in a blog post about the expansion.

The next-generation consoles, Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, have gamers hyped for stunning new eye candy. That desire was stoked by Epic’s reveal of an Unreal Engine 5 demo that pushes far beyond what’s possible on current hardware.

Epic’s demo was only that, however. A demo. It’s unclear when a game might live up to the expectations it sets. In fact, gamers have enjoyed precious few clips of next-gen gameplay. Even events that promised gameplay, like Microsoft’s Xbox Series X First Look, threw out mere scraps.
