Apple is making one red Mac Pro, and it’s going to cost you

Want to get your hands on a Mac Pro that looks like a cross between a Beats Pill and a decorative piece you might find at Ikea? It’ll probably cost you, but at least its for a good cause.

Crafted by Apple Senior Vice President of Design Jony Ive and Marc Newson (Ive recently designed this Leica camera, as well), it has been speculated that this red Mac Pro will bring in between $40,000 to $60,000 when it is sold at auction. The auction is set to take place on November 23 at Sotheby’s in New York City and will be hosted by (RED), a charity run by Bono of U2 fame, which aims to rid the world of AIDS. What’s more, the official Twitter account for Bono’s charity revealed late last month that Apple contributed over $65 million to help the charity’s cause.

Official specs for the red Mac Pro have not been revealed. However, considering that, aside from external hue, this Mac Pro looks identical to the standard black Mac Pro which will be released sometime this December, it’s fair to at least use the standard version as a point of reference to give you an idea of what the red Mac Pro may come with. The base model $3,000 Mac Pro will sport a 3.7GHz Intel Xeon quad core processor, 12GB of RAM, Dual AMD FirePro D300 GPUs and a 256GB PCIe SSD. The $4,000 Mac Pro will net you a six-core 3.5 GHz Intel Xeon processor, 16GB of RAM, a pair of AMD FirePro D500 graphics processors, and a 256GB PCIe SSD.

The Framework laptop has shown that modular laptops can offer something really compelling to customers, and it seems that Apple might have taken notice. That’s because a newly granted patent (number 11709527) suggests the Cupertino, California company is considering a modular MacBook that could let you come up with all kinds of crazy combinations of screen, keyboard, and more.

For example, some of the illustrations in Apple’s patent document show a device with two displays, with the MacBook keyboard replaced entirely by a second screen. This display could be used as an Apple Pencil input area or as a virtual keyboard, something we know Apple is already working on.

Want an M3 Max MacBook Pro? There’s a lengthy wait ahead

If you’ve been holding out for a super-powered MacBook Pro with a high-end M3 Pro or M3 Max chip, you could have a lengthy wait on your hands. That’s because, despite Apple’s plans to launch new Macs later this year, several are reportedly going to miss the cut.

That’s according to journalist Mark Gurman, who claims in a new report that Apple’s flagship 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro models are unlikely to launch until the middle of 2024. Worse, the M3 Mac mini might not see the light of day until late 2024 at the earliest.
