Rumor: Apple planning to launch new product this weekend

apple-logoAs Apple approaches the 10th anniversary of the opening of its first retail store on Thursday, rumors are circulating that the computer giant is about to spring a surprise or two on its fans.

Boy Genius Report is claiming that, according to a “solid Apple source,” the company may be planning “something big” for the weekend.

BGR says that between 10 and 15 employees at each Apple store will be working an overnight shift from Saturday evening and that during that shift, employees will be told to lock their cell phones in the main office and also asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

“Apple stores have apparently already received hardware to install, and are expecting more hardware to come on Friday or Saturday,” BGR says. “All materials that Apple stores have received have been instructed to be under lock and key until after close on Saturday night.”

BGR also claims that Apple employees will be “putting up black curtains at all stores so that people walking outside cannot see inside.”

If BGR is right, we can only speculate as to what exactly the company, which now has more than 300 stores worldwide, might have up its sleeve. A new product perhaps? Is Apple about to surprise us with the launch of a smaller iPhone? Or could it be something completely different – there’s been a lot of talk about its rumored iCloud service recently.

With the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference less than a month away, it might seem strange to some that this weekend would be chosen instead to bring something new to the marketplace.

As usual, the company remains tight-lipped about what might be happening this weekend. Even those working in the stores won’t know what’s coming, if anything. Perhaps it’ll be nothing more than the launch of some new items aimed at interior decorators. iCurtains, anyone? Available in black.

9 new Apple products that could launch in 2023
The back of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

As it currently stands, 2023 has already been a busy year for Apple. The company launched a new yellow iPhone 14, brought back the HomePod, and refreshed its Mac lineup with an M2 Mac mini and M2 MacBook Pro. But what else is on the docket? As it turns out, a lot more. From new iPhones, an upgraded Apple Watch, and possibly an AR headset, here are nine products we still expect from Apple in 2023.
iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro

If there is any Apple product with an upgrade cycle that’s literally like clockwork, it’s the iPhone, which is always out in the fall. This year, we can expect the iPhone 15 lineup to include an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, it is rumored that the iPhone 15 will have a bigger 6.2-inch display this year, but the rest of the lineup will have the same sizes as before.

Apple just patented a new VR headset controller — but there’s a catch
Apple VR Headset Concept by Antonio De Rosa

Apple’s mixed-reality headset is due to launch this June at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), and a freshly published patent hints at some of the controllers Apple might offer with the device. But some major caveats could prevent these accessories from ever seeing the light of day.

The patent (number 20230096068) describes how Apple could create a handheld controller with a “torque feedback mechanism” to provide immersive physical responses while using a mixed-reality headset. That might help offset the drawbacks of virtual input methods (like touchscreens), which can “detract from the realism” of the experience and leave a user unsure if their input has properly registered, according to Apple.

Apple’s VR headset could launch early, and that’s risky

Tim Cook has pushed for Apple to launch its Reality Pro mixed-reality headset as soon as possible, despite objections from the company’s powerful design team. The move raises questions over whether the device will be ready for prime time when it launches this summer.

The news comes from the Financial Times (FT), which cites a former Apple engineer as a source. This engineer reportedly worked on the headset project and noted that there is “huge pressure” on Apple to launch the Reality Pro after years of postponements.
