Samsung to unveil new line of All-In-One Windows 8 PCs at IFA 2012

Samsung Series 7 AIO PC

Check out our review of the Samsung Series 7 all-in-one computer.

The IFA 2012 conference in Berlin is just days away from kickoff, and Samsung has already begun announcing its latest in Windows 8 lineup to prepare consumers for the brand new operating system. Starting at $750, Samsung is releasing new All-In-One (AIO) PCs, a sleek, space-saving device best suited for those just starting college and professionals working from home.

Available in two different screen sizes, the Series 5 and Series 7 are both powered by a third generation Intel Core Processor, with up to 8GB of RAM, a resolution of 1920 x 1080, and HD graphics and audio. The Series 5, the more modest of the two, allows for 500GB of internal memory with a 21.5-inch screen. Series 7 offers screens sizes of 23.6 or 27 inches, both with a hard disk drive of up to 1TB. Both models come complete with a wireless keyboard and mouse — no trackpad. We’re not sure why Samsung decided to stick with one resolution for the three screen sizes, but it ensures the graphics will not be compromised especially with the higher end model rocking an AMD Radeon HD graphic card.

Samsung Series 5 AIO PCThe integrated camera on both Series 5 and Series 7 will recognize user’s finger movement, allowing for a natural gesture technology so you can swipe between pages or rotate your wrist to change the volume — all without getting your fingerprints all over the screen. It will be interesting to see how this gesture plays out in accompaniment of Windows 8, which is heavily touch-based compared to previous versions of the operating system.

“The expansion of our AIO line speaks to the success we’ve had in the PC market over the past year,” said Todd Bouman, vice president of product marketing at Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division. “Both of these new models take Samsung’s convergence technologies to the next level, completing the home computing experience by connecting the PC to other devices in the home environment.”

Series 7 start at $1,100 and goes up to $1,700. Both Series 5 and Series 7 are slated to debut on October 26.

I tried out the incredible Samsung Odyssey Ark monitor, and it has one big problem
Samsung Odyssey Ark vertically

Samsung Odyssey Ark is finally coming -- in fact, you can reserve a unit now for when the monitor goes on sale in early September. It floored me when I saw the display at CES, and it was equally as impressive seeing it a second time. But then I tried to use it with Windows.

Ark is a 55-inch rotating mini LED monitor that stands out with its ability to stack several windows either horizontally or vertically, and it's one of the most anticipated monitors of 2022. The practicality of doing that with a Windows or Mac computer is up for question, though, especially considering Samsung is asking for more money for the Ark than it ever has for a gaming monitor.

HP’s new all-in-one PCs include wireless charging stands
Two people working at an HP all in one PC.

HP announced two new all-in-one (AIO) PCs that are built for hybrid work. Featuring a suite of videoconferencing tools powered by HP Presence, wireless charging stands, and for the first time, Windows 11, HP says the machines are built to help you focus and get things done while working remotely.

There are two new PCs: The EliteOne 800 G9 and the HP Presence AIO. The HP Presence machine is built for, well, HP Presence. HP announced this range of products in October 2021, starting with videoconferencing systems built for meeting rooms. The HP Presence AIO is built for meetings, too, but it moves the features from the meeting room to the home office.
