Ubuntu Ready to Unleash Gutsy Gibbon

Ubuntu Ready to Unleash Gutsy Gibbon

Ubuntu’s unusual naming scheme – an adjective and a noun, progressing alphabetically with every release – may raise eyebrows among those not yet familiar with it, but for the growing crowd of Ubuntu devotees, every goofy new name represents more goodies. And Ubuntu 7.10, Gutsy Gibbon, is no different.

The latest release, due out on Thursday, will sport a variety of new features that make it flashier and more user friendly. One major upgrade: Compiz Fusion will be enabled by default, bringing 3D effects to the desktop. In the past, Compiz was solely the domain of elite Linux users who had the skills to deal with install it on their own. Gutsy will also come with the latest GNOME 2.20 desktop environment.

New users should also be less boggled by drivers thanks to a new graphics configuration tool that will allows them to select which driver to use for their cards, and play with other settings. Printers will also be installed automatically – just plug them in and turn them on. Windows users will also have an easier time switching over, since Ubuntu can now read and write on NTFS partitions by default, meaning all the data accessible under a Windows install is now accessible through Ubuntu as well.

Ubuntu will officially release Gutsy Gibbon on Thursday, but for those that can’t wait, a release candidate is available now. Like most Linux distributions, Gutsy Gibbon will be available completely free of charge.

Meta Quest Pro is held by Mark Zuckerberg.

The Meta Quest Pro has been officially announced at Meta Connect 2022, the company's first attempt at a VR headset designed for professional users. It's an impressive upgrade to the aging Quest 2 hardware as Meta continues to push for a future that centers around the metaverse.

The Quest Pro's display has been greatly improved and the headset is slimmer, and although it is heavier, it's more balanced, which Meta says provides a more comfortable experience. Even the controllers look more compact, losing the iconic tracking ring, improving the appearance of the entire system. The Quest Pro doesn't just look better, it packs much more advanced hardware also.

Why I’m ready to work in VR and embrace the office of the metaverse
Meta's simulation of the view from a next generation VR headset.

In the days leading up to the launch of the Quest Pro, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called the new headset a "great working device" -- possibly even a laptop replacement. Gaming in VR is one thing -- but socializing, living, and working there? It seems as if the broad consensus on the internet is: "no thanks."

But not me. I'm ready and excited to move my working life into virtual reality, and from what we know so far, the Quest Pro just may be the device that fixes many of the current problems with trying to do so on current-gen hardware.
